Beercan Mortar
« on: November 02, 2005, 02:47:08 PM »
Hello All, As some noticed I recently became a site sponsor. I will attempt to provide low cost machine work and products mainly related to cannonering. In my home shop I can provide lathe and mill work, welding and foundry work on a small scale. I also plan to do small runs of barrels, and provide them for purchase here. If there is anything you need made please send me a PM.

The first one is a beercan mortar. It measures 9" long and is machined out of 4.5" 4340 shaft. The trunnion bar is 1.5" in diameter and measures 7.5" long. The trunnion is held on with a 3/8 coarse grade 8 cap screw. These will be provided with the .125" vent hole drilled mostly through. The vent hole is drilled about 1/8" short. It should be no trouble to finish this operation. If any have questions please send me a PM. More details will be over in the classified section. http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=75754

Thanks, Wes

Thanks DD! I can build molds up to about 5", I think. I also plan on selling balls in the mold sizes I have. Which at the moment is 2.6 or beercan caliber. I plan on getting some zinc and providing zinc balls as well as lead.

Powder keg,

Congratulations on the sextuplets!!!!!  :) They look great all snuggled together! It will be a shame to see that family split up. :-)  However, I'm sure they will all go to good homes..... Just be sure that they stay on Goex formula. :D

Darn nice work Wes.  Perhaps I'll be one of your customers one of these days.  Do you anticipate building and offering for sale,  the carriages/platforms for these mortars?  Some of us are not handy at all in that woodwork field (perhaps I'm the only one though).  Also, thanks for placing the THREE Goex powder cans in the first picture.  Might thoughtful of you.  Blaster (Bob in So. IÂ’ve found the barrel the easy part.  The base is what eats up a lot of time.  It is mostly spent in all the little details.

A sled mount is relatively easy to make; two identical side rails and two rectangular transom pieces and all the holes are perpendicular to the sides.  Even adding an elevation screw is pretty simple unless you want to make the handles to scale.

In contrast, a block mount for a Coehorn has that awful hole to inlet for the back end of the tube.  I would guess I spent 10 hours inletting the one I did recently (I suppose you could crudely dig an oversize hole and glass bed for a perfect fit since the mount should be painted.)  Plus the mount uses more thick (and expensive) wood.  And then there is that specialized iron work.

Ok who's postin the plans for building a sled for "little Big Man?"

I know its a beer can mortar, do we drink it first and shoot it empty or the other way around?   :-D

Can't wait to hear the bark out of this little baby.

GREAT workmanship, get to do business with.

Thank you,

Billy

Hey Billy Glad you like it! Drink the suds then fill the cans with cement. No sense in wasting beer. I can pore some zinc or lead balls. If any are interested please PM me.

I have the next batch started. I'm building 9 this time. 3 of them will be Bronze. One is spoken for if anyone would like to reserve one please PM me. I will try to have them done in three weeks or so.

Thanks for the complements, Wesley

Billy,
There is a link in the next to last post in the Plans for a Coehorn Sled Base thread below to a gif image of a plan for a sled base for a 1/4 scale Coehorn.  You will need to double the dimensions for a 1/2 scale one and make any other appropriate adjustments to the barrel you have.

Wes,

Here is my WIP. I thought I would go with a bed instead of a sled. I still have a way to go. But, I'll post photos when finished.  :D
