Synthetic Varmint stock, like em'???

Hello all, I was contemplating getting the new varmint stock.  Has anybody found any downfalls to this stock set up?  Any input is great, flaws, faults, love them, anything goes...  Thanks

I liked them so well on my Fluted 204 and 223 , I put them on my 45-70 and 308, really reduced recoil.............

I'm having a hard time warming up to it on my .22-250 Fluted Ultra, it's ok from the bench on a bipod. I need to shoot it more to get more familiar with it, though.  Comparing the recoil pad to a good pad like a Limbsaver or Kick-eez, it doesn't compare as far as I'm concerned for  hot 45-70 loads or anything with more than 20-25lbs recoil energy, it's just too firm, but it should be fine with standard factory loads, though.

I have one on my 25-06 and I love it!!

Great for bench shooting and use with a bipod. I feel I can hold more steady with it when shooting groundhogs....just gives you somthing to  take a good hold of. :wink:

I don't own any.....yet, but here's my take on the reduced recoil.......so far three or four have said that these type stocks (Survivor also) reduce the felt recoil, hmmmm., could it be due to the way the stock is gripped with the wrist, hand, and elbow in a more downward position therefore allowing the arm between the wrist and elbow to act as a sort of spring to absorb some of the recoil before it gets to the shoulder? Also could accuracy improve due the firmer grip of the stock also? Digger has stated that his Survivor stocks have turned the 445SM into a pussycat. I'll get to shoot his soon and have more comments then I suppose, but for now does anyone else feel like I do?

my view is that the felt recoil is less because the shooter pulls the stock firmly into his/her shoulder (as should always be done)because it's easier with your wrist at that angle and height.When the buttstock is firmly in the shoulder it seems to recoil less because it starts out on your shoulder,it doesn't slam into it.accuracy improves with the firm hold also.....just my thoughts  :D

Ok Bladerunner, I'll let ya shoot some 2400fps 300gr nosler partitions in my 45-70 Handi after I put the Choate Varmint stock on it for ya!!! It's just barely comfortable with a limbsaver on a laminated stock and 2¼ lbs of lead in the stock. I do believe the Choate stock with no extra weight in it, would hurt the shoulder and considerably more. I figure recoil energy is about 35lbs as near as I can, which is in .375 H&H territory. :eek:

Quik - I didn't believe it to be possible either for a while, but with all the reports, I'm becoming a believer. If you have a set of the Surviors, maybe you should try them with the 45-70 and the load you mentioned and give us a report. That's the same load I plan to get to in my 45-70 and would be interested in your report on the Survivor stocks, barrel, and load combo.

When I sighted in my 45-70 with the wood stock, I could only fire 2 shots, it was very uncomfortable. When I put the Choate stock on it,  I fired it 12 times from the bench without discomfort. If you put a Limb Saver recoil pad on it, would really be great...

I have a survivor and the Ultra varmint stock, neither has a good recoil pad on it. The Ultra pad is better that the Survivor, but still way too hard. I checked the medium grind-to-fit Limbsaver, the narrow end is too small and the hole spacing is incorrect, so it won't work on the Ultra stock. For the weanie loads Poncaguy is shooting(sorry Larry :wink: ) the Ultra stock should work ok, but for heavy recoil, you're gonna be sorry. Should be fine for the 445SM, too.


edit: it was a medium limbsaver I tried.

Comb drop has a lot to do with felt recoil.  Also, where on the butt plate are you actually reacting the recoil can magnify the muzzle jump, especially when shooting from the bench rests with little or no control from your non trigger hand.

I've a choate varmint on my 30-30 "Tactical".
Bought another set for the next handi.
They aren't pretty, but i like to use them.

Matt Parliament, please tell us how the recoil is on the 45-70 BC with 2500fps 300gr loads if that's why you're asking!!! :eek: I've also shot 538gr loads at 1750fps and it's certainly no picnic, I can't imagine wanting to do it twice with the UV stock with it's lack of weight and poor recoil pad, better angle and drop or not.....as a matter of fact, ain't even gonna try it once...... 8)

I have a 22 Hornet in Handi and want the 45-70 barrel, how bad is recoil compared to the 7mm rem mag I don`t reload yet but want to soon?

The figures are there for you to compare...the 7mag recoil appears to be about the same as .30-06 recoil, if that helps. .45-70 recoil with some loads is going to be a fair amount more, just depends on whatcha wanta shoot in the 45-70.

Quick~  No chance with this stock and the mighty 45-70!! :shock:   I'd like to use it with the 270, 243, 223, 44 mag.....  However, when I shoot those hot 45-70's the synthetic stock is filled with a sock filled with lead shot, works great for felt recoil.  I remove the sock when hunting because I don't feel the recoil in hunting situations of course.  The long BC barrel feels quite even and stable with no lead in the stock and light to carry.
