Sargent/ freeport question

Hi guys, found this site by looking at the hog hunting forum. going to be in the sargent freeport area 3rd week of march,any advice on surf fishing locations. I know where the freeport jetty is. And I know how to get on the beach going either way at sargent. Taking a couple of friends who have never wet a line in saltwater, and hope to show them a good time so they will get hooked and help share the costs of future trips.

ok guys i'm gonna tra again--if this thing post twice i'm probably gonna get caught in a lie cause i caint remember more than 5 minutes.
so onto the subject---i can't post on jetty fishing because iv'e never done any.
surf fishing--it is a real good way to catch some large trout and reds--but if you have never done it stay away-well away-from the jetties and san luis pass--i can be real dangerous. having said that -there is some real good fishing i those areas.
i would suggest the surf--you want to fish past the 2nd and 3rd bars. the fising in the surf will not be good now--the water is off, the tides are low and you need green water too the 3rd bar-this will come during the spring when the spring flood tides come in.
equipment-- i will not comment on bait fishing as i don't do this and really don't know much to say--you will need a good 6'6'' or longer rod--a life vest---a really long stringer-as in really long(pesky ol sharks )-- get a good wade fishing map that shows the surf and wading spots(just opinons on this) which can be had at any good fising store--a good hat which ties down and will hold lures(so when you get swamped you won't lose everthing)--and  NO waders (it won't be cold that long).

well it was a good night.
i have another thought for you which i think will provide you and your friends a lot more enjoyment, if not success. when you are down you will not be that far from port oconnor and my second favorite place to fish, second only because of convenience, a first if we are talking without reguards to time, matagorta bay. why don't you charter a guide for your fishing. there are a number of them in the area and i could perhaps assist in the location of one of these fella's. i believe you would find this completely worthwhile and productive-and i might add-lead to further quartly excursions to the area.

Thanks for the replys william, We have access to surf rods and I can throw a cast net pretty well. The place we're staying at has 3 or 4 crab traps setting on the dock so we should be fixed for bait and equipment.

When do the spring tides generaly get started.

Don't worry about us getting into a dangerous situation around the jettys or passes we're greenhorns, the term you can use to refer to me when it comes to wading in the ocean is  Chicken .  Not enough experience yet to know what I'm doing.  I have fished with a guide out of Matagorda before and we'll probably do so again on this trip, if we don't spend all our money on hogs. If you hear of any good bites or patterns developing down that way this week let me know and I will mail you beer.

the answer is not one you want--probable in april---but the surf may be clear and i hope yall do well.

I just got back from the gulf, I just learned how to post a photo, so naturally I have show you that we had a little luck.  The most important thing is that my bud in the photo is hooked, he didn't want to come home.
