German 98 Mauser
« on: November 03, 2005, 04:22:45 PM »
I am going to look at a German 98 Mauser that a guy at work has. It belongs to his grandfather. I Know nothing about them, Can anyone point out the weak points on these guns? I have been searching, and found some info, but thought I would check you folks out. I am kind of in a pinch for time. The gun looks fine, but I am not familiar with these guns. I can get it for $125. Thanks for any advice. - Gordy.

Check the receiver rollstamp and proof markings.  A "real" German WWII mauser K98 will have the waffenamt army acceptance marks (small spread eagle on a swastika with numbers).  See that it is complete and unmodified (cutdown stock, missing handguard, drilled receiver, etc).

Late war production items generally have very rough machined finishes,   laminated "plywood" stock, and stamped trigger guard/floorplate and barrel bands.  Earlier production have better finishes and milled parts.  If the earlier production, and all matching numbers, it's a bargain at $125.

Thanks John,On the top in front of the bolt,it has an eagle and it could be a swastaca under it. Above it it says FABRICA DE ARMIS. The ARMIS is hard to read, so it may be different. Below the eagle it says LACORURA 1947. It has H-2240 on the bolt, which is straight. On the left side (when shoulderd) it  says Cal 792 [P] [R] . Thanks for any help, I got it for $100, so whatever it is I won't be to put out. They were still shooting it and said it was accurate. Regards - Gordy.

"fabrica de armas" and "La Coruna" indicates that your mauser 98 was made at the Spanish government arsenal at La Coruna.  It's chambered for the standard German caliber 7.9x57 or amm Mauser service cartridge.

Let us know how it shoots!

You made that sound easy John. I know nothing about these things, except they are a real piece of machinery. I will keep you posted on the shooting of it. I sure do appreciate your info, GBO is a great place to be!! Have a good weekend - Gordy.

I shot the mauser, and it shoots well. I read that I should check the chamber headspace. I see a lot of gauges for this, which maker would be a good one? Also, does the Cerrosafe from Midway work at all? From what I have read, this is a model 43 8mm. Thanks to all - Gordy.

Remove the firing pin and shroud from the bolt, put a little pice of masking tape on the head of a round chamber the round and cloze the bolt and see if you can feel  resistance. think your looking for .005" or less i've shot rifles with a lot more

putting tape on a case will not give you any kind of idea where the headspace is.
