7mm-08 poor grouping, an update...
« on: November 04, 2005, 04:14:16 AM »
In my last post I had tried the 7mm-08 Handi with Winchester Power Point bullets.  I was getting groups of 5 inches at best.

So, I tried the Remington Core Lokt yesterday and was getting 2 inch groups.  Still not great but it'll have to do until deer season is over.  Should be good enough for a good shot on a deer out to 100 yards.  I now have 100 rounds through the gun.

I am now starting to think that it is indeed the scope.  I have a $70 Redfield scope on the gun, new but cheap.  I think after this season I am going to buy a Leupold or maybe a Nikon upper end scope.

A two inch group from a hunting rifle is acceptable.  It may not be as accurate as you would prefer or even what the caliber is capable of, but its good enough for a deer.

However, if you believe you have a scope problem, that two inch group could be a five incher the next time out.

If you have time, you might go back out and shoot both types of ammo to check if the group size remains what it was.  If so, that may indicate that your rifle shoots better with the Rem's and that your scope may be ok.

Good luck.

If you have checked all the screws on the scope...I'd have to check the scope by shooting a square...basically you sight the rifle in...then move the adjustments 4 inches left and 4 inches high shoot a round...move the scope 8 inches right....shoot...move 8 inches down...shoot...then move 8 inches left..shoot...then move 4 inches right and 4 inches high...you should be back to the original adjustment...shoot...see it this last shot shoots to your original adjustment...If it doesn't go back....change the scope....

I would also try another brand of ammo...the Remingtons are better...but I have seen ammo make a hugh difference...Good Luck

BD'

if you have - or can borrow - a bore sighter, check the point of aim on the present scope, install a new one making sure that the base and rings are tight, and adjust the new scope to the same point of aim while leaving the bore sighter installed on the rifle.    shoot it at short range to see if it's on, and then go hunting.   i agree with the man who said that the 2" group could become 5" the next time out.    you'll be flogging yourself if you miss a big one because of it!

i'd hate to see that happen to you.
