I was looking for a. 50 caliber flint lock rifle kit to put together for a winter project. I can't find any kits other than the ubiquitous generic hawken pattern that it seems everyone sells, and ultra high dollar kits from custom makers. any ideas on sources for kits that are fairly cheap (300.00 or less)? I would like to find something like the CVA Mountain Rifle.

I was just checking out CVA`s website, they don`t make anything traditional anymore, so many companies are heading that way, it`s a real shame as I like modern and traditional muzzleloaders. Heck, they don`t even make the Hawken anymore. Jack.

It seems 10 years ago just about anything could be had in kit form. Now all I see are those in-lines,to each his own but I just dont like the looks of those things.

well now I my have the answer for you have you ever heard of DEER CREEK PRODUCTS? well they have bought the stuff from cva, and are useing maple for thier stock , the possible shop was carrying them but they are not listing them any more he also carries cva and has a large selection of others, his phone number is :765-525-6181. hope this helped you out. kjg

TOTW is a great company to deal with. I have ordered from them several times, always with complete satisfaction. They will spend all the time you need on the phone with your questions, too. I am in the middle of my own winter project from them, a 1770 Bivins Lancaster, and having a great time with it. The parts are all top quality and everything is going together according to plan.

Building a rifle is a lot of work, whether you make a beauty or a beater. Why not go for a beauty?

Why don't you buy a GPR kit ? (Lyman Great Plains Rifle) It's the Best Buy for the Money in a low priced BP mass produced rifle IMHO.

If you plan on deer hunting I suggest the .54 cal. I have shot thousands of shots from mine & have never had a problem with it. Buy it, build it, learn it & shoot it. And when you get it done, don't go into all this modification stuff & try to make a 1000 rifle out of a 300 one like some guys do on other mass produced rifles.......... it will always be a 300 rifle....... Leave it as it is & learn to make it work & all will be fine. If you want a 1000+ rifle, then buy a parts set from Tracks or someone & build that.

Also keep in mind, the CVA, T/C Traditions, Lyman kits are "Assembly Kits" & can easily be done on the kitchen table at home. These should NOT be confused with the "so called" rifle kits at Tracks, MBS, Log Cabin & etc. These people are selling "Component Sets" to build rifles and IMHO calling them a kit is very misleading, as they are not Plug & Play like some people think......

I'll agree with kjg, give Deer Creek a call. Their Deer Creek Rifle is less than $189 + s&h percussion, about $20 more for flint. It is basically the old CVA Mountain Rifle. They bought the barrel making equipment from Douglas Barrels when that outfit dropped black powder barrels. From what I hear, they are as good as, or better than Green Mountain barrels. They also make the Mowrey rifles, a mule ear rifle and the Hopkins & Allen underhammers. All are in kit form, "98% inletted -- parts in the white." (from their catalog.)

Thanks for the info on Deer Creek.

After finding out that the Austin&Halleck flint lock Mountain Rifle that I had my eye on was a wash(it had a 1-28" twist) I had settled on the idea of a Lyman GPR flint lock kit, but that Deer Creek rifle is a dead ringer for the old CVA Mountain Rifle. I think that I may go that route.

I'll let you know what happens...

I think $300
They shoot great. You can get them fron Dixie too as a frontier which is the same rifle.

I have had really good experience with the Lyman GPR kits. I have built a 50 and a 54 caliber rifles, and each has worked out just fine.

I don't know how "traditional" you want to be about it, but one thing I really like with the GPR is how easily I can mount a peep sight on it. Means increased sight radius, turning a RB rifle into a very accurate deer and javelina weapon. It is almost as accurate as one of my scoped centerfire rifles.

Assembly is easy and "doable", with a minimum of modification. Look for them at www.midsouthshooterssupply.com.
