Transfer bar and new barrel question?? HELP!!!
« on: November 04, 2005, 09:56:23 AM »
I have my handi in 500 S&W and went to the range today and the transfer bar came out of my rifle! I didn't shoot it today and came home to look at it and I managed to get it back in but it slides back and forth on the pin and I don't think it will hold up to the recoil. Should I send it back to H&R or does anyone have a fix for it? Also, If I send it in I will get another barrel for my handi but I don't have a clue as to which one.
I have a 22 mag for small game, 20gauge/500 handi for big game but I want a long range handi for deer size game, which one?

25-06
280
308
30-06

which handi in the above calibers is the most accurate?  Lastly, how long does it take to get a barrel and repair work done? Thanks!! :D

can't help with the first part,Quick or mac can,i'm sure....define "long range" and I'll answer the second part the best i can while we wait on the experts
On average, you'll be without your handi 2-4 weeks
Good shot placement + well constructed bullet = DEAD

Sorry to hear about your first experience with the .500, there's another thread down the page by Ditchdigger on the same problem, check it out.

For the long range deer caliber, I'd opt for either the .25-06 or the .280 since they both come with 26" barrels, the .308 and .30-06 are both 22". If you think you might ever wanta elk hunt, the .280 would be the better choice of those 2.

Yep my transfer bar fell out also. I called them and told them what happened, and that I could put a new one in myself. So Jennifer says okay and a new one will put in the mail to you.Judgeing by the way she talked it must happen preety often. For the second part,280 all the way and you want be sorry. The 26" barrel makes into nearly a 7 mag.,and very little recoil for the power it delievers.   Hope this helps.  Digger

It's funny, I haven't heard of many occuring till I checked out this thread. I just happened to have the same problem a few months ago when I sent my receiver off to get fitted for a 30-06 Comp barrel. When I finally got it back, I went to cock it and the bar fell/poped out. But mine wasn't an easy slip on fix, had to send it back to the factory and wait even longer to shoot my rifle. Oh-well, things happen, even crappy ones...but they pass :)
