What is the best way for acquiring a .338/06 barrel?
« on: November 04, 2005, 06:14:25 PM »
I'm interested in getting a Handi-barrel is .338/06, but the only way I can figure out to accomplish this is by getting a barrel in .30/06, or .280 Remington, or .270 Winnie, or .25/06 and having it rebored.

How heavy are the barrels for the .30/06, .270, .280 and .2506?  Which one might be best for making into a .338/06?

Thanks for any comments or suggestions.   8)

Best choice is the .25-06 being rebored to .338, the chamber on the .270 or .280 aren't ideal, and the .270 and .30-06 are only .22". Mac and I both have had .25-06 barrels rebored to .338-06 by Wayne York of Oregon Gunsmithing, he did excellent jobs on our barrels. They both shoot sub moa, Mac's with 180gr Accubonds, and mine with 230gr Failsafes and 250gr Sierra Game Kings. Wayne will charge about $300 for the rebore. He uses 6 groove, cut rifling.

Thanks again Quicktdoo ..... and again for the pics.  Also thanks for the headsup on the gunsmith as well.  I live north of Seattle, so I probably could go visit the guy.

As for barrels, I'm not too thrilled with the .25/06 cartidge (never been), but I could order two .280 barrels (also 26" in length) and keep the best of the two.

Thanks for all your help Quicktdoo.
