New Hornady POINTED ammo for 30-30
« on: November 05, 2005, 11:27:18 AM »
Has anyone tried the new POINTED !! ammunition for the 30-30 called the Hornady LeverEvolution?  Is this ammo everything it is bragged up to be? Is it REALLY safe to use in a tube magazine , during cold weather (below freezing).

Thanks,

I don't think it's available yet, .30-30 and .35 Rem will be shipping next week from Midsouth....

That's one of those ideas that you wonder why someone didn't think of it sooner, and I wish it were me holding the patent!!

Still makes me wonder if the polymer / plastic tip will be affected by the cold.

Knowing that most hunting takes place in colder weather, I hope Hornady tested some at low temperature before going to market.

Knowing that any firearms-related firm is a big juicy target for contingency lawyers, I'm certain that Hornady did this...their leaders are hunters afterall.  What impresses me most is the extra 250 fps they get out of the ammo.  A 200-grain .35 Remington load at 2225 fps is impressive if SAAMI specs are followed, which I am sure they are.  Perhaps an extension of their Light Magnum load technology...

Thanks for all the replys!!! I did call the company up this morning and they said that it has been tested in all different types of climates and proven safe to use. I did find out that the retail dealers will not be getting their first shipments until about the 1st of December. That is about midway through the deer season here. They do not have any plans at this point in offering any additional loads . They first want to see how the product sells. If it is verything that the literature says that it is, then it should sell VERY well!! The price is not bad either, Just a couple of dollars more than the regular ammo.

What the fuss?  The normal Hornady soft-points work fine.  Just have to load one in the chamber and only the one in the tube.  I have rearely seen anyone need more than 2 shots for a hunt.

Dan:

Is that you in the picture with the Hornady hat?  If that is you, what type of ear plugs were you using? I am looking for some ear muffs / ear plugs that are not as bulky as the old headphone style of ear muffs.

Thanks,

Nope, that's not me. It was a range officer who agreed to model for me. The plugs are just basic foam plugs, I believe.

The soft tip bullet is clever but what I really want to know is what powder they are using and where can I get some.  If the factory specs. are to be believed, they get 2400 fps from a 160 grain .30-30.  The last factory ammo I clocked was only doing 2150 fps from a 20" barrel and 150 grain bullet.  I plan to get a couple boxes and try them out over my chronograph.  I got to see this for myself.

weight loss?
« Reply #14 on: November 15, 2005, 01:26:00 PM »
looks like it lost 20% of its weight in the jel--is that the norm for a 30-30 to loose that much weight in jel?
I have never bothered to weigh recovered bullets. Would it loose considerably more weight punching thru a shoulder?

Dan, I enjoyed your write up on the Hornady LeveRevolution....very well done!!

Do you by chance know if Hornady is going to offer these bullets as a reloading component?  Also, do you know what the Ballistic Coefficients are for these bullets.  The Hornady site says that the BC's were greatly improved (i.e. point vs flat or round nose bullet) but nowhere that I could find did they say what the BC's were.  I am particulary interested in the 325 Grn 45/70.

It has hapended to me and more than once to have to shoot 5 if not 6 times at running wild boars !

I wish they speed up the offering in 444Marlin.

Besides, the extra range and speed is a big bonus when you shoot at running game for you need to give less lead.

Boar Hunter   Don't be too optimistic about the improvement in ballistics.  It won't be a noticeable difference in the lead required on a running animal.  Same thing for the bullet drop at anything but very long range.

Aww.. I was hoping you got to try them out in one of the new Marlin XLRs. One of those 336XLRs is just calling my name...

Dan's article quoted +1800 fps for the 325 grain .45-70.  Not too bad... Hornady's own website is quoting 2050 fps for the same bullet that's getting up there!  Guess the Hornady folks found a way to get a few more grains of powder in the case...
