Removing rust freckling
« on: November 05, 2005, 01:18:54 PM »
Just got a 99 Savage with very good bluing but has fairly small freckles but quite a few of them.  What are some ways to get them off without hurting the original blue?  I have a new clean muslin wheel that could be used if it won't over buff things.   It's soaking in Breakfree right now.

clodbuster,
I've used fine steelwool 000 or 0000 and your favorite brand of gun oil. Try rubbing away the freckles.  I would NOT use the buffing wheel as someone will think you've reblued!

Use bronze wool, it won't hurt the blueing.

I've used 0000 steel wool and WD40 for years. Lightly done it will remove the rust flecking without damaging the blue.
