My trip to the range with the 500 S&W
« on: November 05, 2005, 07:09:25 PM »
Well, I finally got to the range yesterday. I did not have as much time as I would have liked and I had a couple Handis to sight in.

First off, I only had one 500 load with me. (Don't even ask why....) But I am glad I had that! Here is how it went. Accuracy was as expected, about an inch at 50 and right at 2" @ 100. Recoil stiff as compared to my 12ga ultra and 45-70 fired right after. While it was LESS than the 12 ga buckhammers, 1.25 OZ @ 1500 fps. it was MORE than the 45-70, 300 hp's @ 1900.

Here is what hodgdon said about my load:
Quote
500 S & W MAGNUM
 CASE: STARLINE

BBL: 10"
 PR: WINCHESTER LR
 TWIST: 1:18"
 TRIM: 1.615"
350 GR. HDY XTP (Maximum Loads)
 DIA. .500
 COL: 1.985"

 H4227 42.5 1863 49,900 PSI

 H110 43.0 1877 50,600 PSI

 (Start) LIL'GUN 35.0 1697 41,500 PSI
 (Max)  LIL'GUN 42.0 1912 48,100 PSI

 Longshot 23.0 1602 50,000 PSI

 Titegroup 18.5 1461 50,000 PSI

 Here is what I loaded:

Here is/was the velocity:

SO, if you figure the estimated velocity would be about 1800 fps, I netted a increase of almost 300 fps for the longer barrel!!  WOOHOO!!
I really need to get back down the the other loads and see what I get with them. But with that load I about duplicated the specs for the 450marlin with a bigger dia bullet. What will I get with more powder? I don't think I will load this one any hotter. Just looking at primers, (not scientific) it was a nice load.

I will get more data ASAP, had to pass along how it went.

Figuring a 8.5lb gun...and your load...it comes in around 30.10 ft lbs of recoil...my 10 lb handi firing my 300 grain Nosler load at 2430...comes in at 31.20 ftlbs...I might make a suggestion...fill the stock with shot...add a Limbsaver if you haven't already done so...and add a neopreane shell holder to the stock...this tames it down considerably...

Recoil is a VERY subjective thing. Some hate & avoid it, some ride with it and take it as it comes and some just dont care. I guess I am in the middle, it dosent bother me much. I was trying to report everything that happened, kinda like an observation, for others that haven't shot one yet.

You are right on with the sims pad!!  This is a prefit model...kinda fits. I have one on all my heavy recoiling rifles. No sense getting pounded unnecessarily!!! :-D

OK, UPDATE:

I got some 500gr loads thru the chronograph the other day!! Trouble is I forgot my camera!!!  Damn CRS!!! :(  :) I did have my Phone and its got a camera!! Not the best, but good enough so you can see the results.

I loaded up two different 500 hornady loads, both middle of the road as far as the powder charge. One with H110 the other with Lil-gun. Lil-Gun was a bit faster but not really enough to mention.

Here is the first load, H110 w/ Hornady 500 gr bullet.

Here is the second load, Lil-Gun and the same 500ge Hornady:

Here is the target from 100 yrds:

more to come....

Just out of interest how big IS that group?
I'm not expecting anything astounding from what really amounts to the ballistic capabilities of a 500gn fishing sinker!
But I am interested.
I'm thinking about 2.5"?

I did not save the target, just its image.
Looks like the "10" ring is just shy of 1.75" so I'd say that group is closer to 1.5 than 2.5

Here is one I just snapped with a ruller on it for you!
