45-70 double rifle???
« on: November 06, 2005, 12:27:02 PM »
:D Hello Everyone,

I'm submitting these questions on Big Bore thread because I thought more people reading and responding to this thread would know more about the Pedersoli 45-70 Double Rifle.  Although you don't see many of them for sale, I was wondering if anyone out there had any knowledge or experience with them.  I've read quite a few threads about the muzzle loading versions but nothing on the breach action double.

So, here are my questions:
1.  Is the 45-70 double as hard to sight in as the muzzle loaders?  I suppose the actual type and weight of the ammo would really make the difference.

2.  Are they reliable?  Has anyone heard of any problems with them?

3.  What type of loads can you shoot in them?  Are they designed for the heavier thumpers or just the old fashioned light loads?

4.  Where can you find one?  I've looked all over and haven't seen one in a couple of years.  Is that because they are so good and no one wants to part with theirs?  OR...is it because they were discontinued and no one wants one?

I really do appreciate any info anyone can provide.  Thanks for your time and your responses.

JT

You might try Cabella's or Pedersoli's.  Both should have them.  I believe that there is one rear sight each for each barrel.  Thus, there is no problem with regulation.  I do not know about the power of the ammo, but I would believe that the lower velocity stuff would be the norm.

Justice Trimble,

If you’re talking about those Spartan Model SPR22 being imported by Remington I have seen one.  It was in a store in Sacramento and the finish of the rifle leaves much to be desired.  It is the only .45-70 double rifle I have held but compareing it to English doubles it comes in a very poor second.  Lawdog

I think these are the rifles JT is referring to....

I wouldn't hold my breath on the release of the Baikal/Spartan sxs 45-70, Remington keeps pushing their arrival date back!

I will be receiving one myself soon in 45-70, which I will be re-chambering to .450 Nitro no.2.
These are strong enough.
Several have been rechambered to similar rounds, including .458 RCBS.
They are excellent platforms to work from, from what I "hear"..
The .450 no.2 is the most you can go with them though.
I am also thinking of the 12-bore muzzleloader from Cabelas.
Makes me think of Selous and others.
But yes, the Kodiak is good for the money.
It is not a Holland's Best, but for people like me, it's all we will ever be able to afford.
Take care.
