Deer Down (My Best so Far)
« on: November 07, 2005, 08:22:04 AM »
Went hunting this weekend.  After an uneventful Saturday, didn't see a blasted thing, I went back Sunday morn and saw to scrub bucks.  I had placed a stand Saturday mid-day in the mesquites, and decided to hunt there that afternoon.  Got on stand at noon, as the deer were moving early, and at 4:25 p.m., this guy came by and I shot him at 30 yards.  I've included two new pics of him at my feeder in October, and then right after I took him.

Great deer!  30 yards.......did it require a high velocity round from a "magnum"?

 Congratulations, nice deer.  I also hunted this week-end, Saturday morning was spoiled when my son shot a hog (about 275-300 lb boar) at about 8:30 AM.  It was so hot we had to get him field dressed and to the locker as quickly as possible.  Sunday morning I didn't get a decent shot, seen two very respectable bucks but neither would give me a clear shot.  Sunday afternoon, I sat in the stand from 1:30 to dark, the flys and mosquitoes almost ate me alive, and it was 84 degrees out there.

I will try again Friday, maybe I can get lucky and find the big 12 that has been running through my place.  There won't be any more afternoon hunting for this old boy until it cools off a good bit.  Mid-eightys just isn't my idea of deer hunting weather. :D  :D  :D

And for all those "non-belivers", the hog was killed with one shot from about 150 yards with a Rossi Single Shot .243, 100 grain Sierra Bt.  It moved about 10 feet after being hit, and my son said it was dead when he walked up to it about 10 minutes later.

Nice deer.     Great photos from the trail cam.

What is the age and weight?      What county is your place?

Time to take some does and pigs now?

I was using the Cuddeback 1.3 camera to get those pics.  I've since bought me another Cuddeback (3.0 megapix) and I've got it out also.  I shot this deer with a Remington 700 Light Varmit in 7mm-08 topped with Zies Conquest 3x9x40.  Was shooting handloads, 40 grains of Varget pushing a 130 grain Speer BT Spitzer.

Not sure of the age at this point, but thinking maybe 3.5 or 4.5.  I went through some pics from last year and believe I caught him on camera several times, or might be a twin that had huge rack.

I was hunting a 1500 ranch that sits in Jack and Young County.  I was on the Young County side when I took this deer.  I prob screwed up when I didn't get a shoulder mount.  My wife is not a hunter and thinks we are sinning when we hunt for horns, and that we all are in trouble with the MAN when it comes to sport hunting.  I did get a Euro mount and will have a pic of him jumping (I think) posted below the mount.  Somebody has told me I can always get a shoulder mount, but will have to get a cape.  We'll see......

Those college boys haven't gotten down your way yet and altered the DNA or the 7mm/08 would have just bounced off!!!

Looks like the "puny", 7mm/08 was more than enough for deer at 30 yards.........

Nice deer, good hunt, proper equipment........count your blessings every day!

Deer Pics
« Reply #10 on: November 09, 2005, 03:11:16 AM »
My brother put together some photos to get a better look and the deer that is posted live at the top is not the same deer I shot.  The G-3 and G-4 on the right side are different, and there is not an extra point on the right side.  So, that means this deer might still be running around out there.  The guy mounting the deer said he green scored it at 146+, but he's not an official scorer of sorts.  We'll have to wait and see, but looks like possibly in the 40's....

Euro mounts look great and sure save lots of room for more trophies in the future.    Capes can be found.   I saved mine for my taxidermist friend from my last three euro mounts.
Hopefully, I will have to make that decision this weekend! :-)
I have friends hunting in Archer Co.   Maybe that will be inspired by your success.
As far as the photos, with a particular consistent antler characteristic, it is hard to tell some bucks from year to year.   Particularly related bucks!  Thank goodness the antlers tend to have the same "abnormalities."

Well, got the deer scored this afternoon and he was a typical 12-point and scored 144 3/8 gross.

Great deer.   Are you going to enter him in the TX Big Game Awards?  I put my wife's deer in this year because it may be the biggest one she kills for a awhile.     Region 8, "paula", Atascosa Co.

Thanks for the photos.   Very handsome buck.

Very nice buck. I would have probably had a shoulder mount done of that one.

My wife isn't a hunter either, but since she likes the meat. She also understands that my taking wild game is more ethical than most of the meat purchased at the store. Ironically she was with me when I took my first whitetail.
