38-55 Win.

:D OK, this forum is addicting.  Since lurking here I have purchased a Contender with a 44 Mag barrel and have a 223 barrel on the way from Ed, both are 14 inches.  I have been playing with a Marlin in 38-55 Win.  Has anyone tried a Contender in that caliber?  The 38-55 in the Marlin is fun and easy to shoot, I thought I might enjoy shooting a Contender in that caliber.  What do you think?   :?

Mike,

I have a 12" Hunter in 375 Winchester which is a sweet shooting barrel.  It's easily one of my favorites to shoot any time I go to the range.

Mike H, if for some reason you want a contender chambered for 38-55, the same caliber as your rifle, I sure someone could lengthen the chamber of a 375 Win. barrel or built you a custom barrel. But what you have to remember is that 38-55 case is not as strong of a case as the 375 Win. case. The 375 case is designed for 52,000 cup, the 38-55 case is not. You can load the 375 case down to 38-55 levels but you can't load the 38-55 case up the 375 levels. In the contender the 375 Win. is an enjoyable caliber to shoot. The recoil is not too high. With the 250 gr. factory ammo, I can easily keep all my shots on a 4" bullseye at 100 yds., with open sights.  8)

T/C custom shop lists 38-55 as an available caliber in pistol and carbine bull barrels.  I didn't ask, but suspect they will have the faster 1-12 twist of the 375 winchester and not the traditional 1-16 or 1-18 twist of the 38-55.  If you are only shooting jacketed bullets, probably not an issue, if you are going to shoot lead it's not optimal.
