Still learning about the NEF HandiRifle
« on: November 07, 2005, 07:49:17 PM »
I've been learning some/a lot   about this rifle.
I bought my NEF in 45-70. Been trying to find out more (I did :o ) on
light loads, BP loads,etc.
Then, found out, about the really sticky     topic of FILLERS !
Printed out a lot on the subject. Plus, using pistol powders in 45-70 cases,
with a 405 gr lead bullet. This has to be a really touchy subject as well.
All I can say,is WOW  .
I have Pyrodex "P", 3 F Goex, and IMR 4198. Been loading for 30-35 years. Some loads I won't load. Primarily for safety reasons.
At least, I'm trying to learn more on the 45-70.

Hi Mac,
No. No one is posting anything dangerous.
My reply didn't get through the first time.
Lyman's 47th Handbook sent me on this quest.
I was on a quest to find out more.
What I did, find almost scared me.Found a link to using pistol powders in 45-70 cases (and similar case capacities).
I wouldn't suggest trying.
And then, using fillers for reduced powder loads. I got was "I don't use fillers." to,"I use fillers." And, then the barrel ringing, etc.
I'll just stick to the results from loading manuals. And what they say.
At least,I'll have my rifle, and body parts.

Well, FWIW, Accurate and Hodgdon both advise to not use fillers with any of the large capacity cases such as the 45-120. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me, what do I know!!

A couple of the popular loads using handgun powders used by a lot of shooters is 13.5gr Unique and a 405gr cast bullet. Another is 28gr 2400 and the 350gr Hornady. I've not shot the Unique load, but I have shot the 2400 load, it shoots real good in my .45-70 Mannlicher Handi, 1½" groups at 100yds with the WGRS peep sight.

I've used XMP5744 in the 45-120, it should work well in the 45-70, also. I've read of others that love SR 4759 for reduced loads in their 45-70, also. The Lyman 48th has a lot of the 5744 and 4759 loads listed.

Hi Bud, :D
Thanks for your reply.
Ok,I'll be pulling bullets.Didn't make many.  :o
Did do several in BP.About 30, with FFg GOEX.(45-60-405)
Think I have some 2400. Will have to check. Got loads  of
UNIQUE.
Will probably have to go to Ronning Arms,Sierra Sports,or Modesto Guns
for more BP supplies. Or, if need be, Barnwood Arms in Ripon.
Would like to try out the Pyrodex Pellets.
Wolfsong is letting me know about the up-comming bear hunt.
Plan on taking the 454 F.A.,44 mag Winchester lever, and my 44 Ruger
RedHawk. And sure as shootin', the good ole' 45-70 Handi.
As of now, only have the 405 gr RNFP from Western Nevada Bullet.
Got to go.Thanks again.
