Still unsure...
« on: November 08, 2005, 05:54:45 AM »
I know this is my second request for help, however I’m totally bemused by all the options available…. I get the feeling that the Walnut Press is the one to go for, but then there are so many types of dies, and which manufacturer etc??? Please can someone help me choose.
I shoot .308 and would like to produce rebated boat tails for this for hunting and target, also I would like to produce 44mag jacketed and possible 357 mag. Ideas welcome please.

Here is my opinion: get the Walnut hill press and die sets from RCE. The quality is top drawer and the designer (Richard Corbin) is a top flight machinist who was the floor expert at Corbins Company for many, many years. The price is very competitive with any other maker, and the WH series dies are stronger than the Corbin 'S' series ( they will still crack if too tough  a lead alloy is used). I have never been disappointed with either RCE or Corbin's company, but I really believe RCE has the edge in the area of basic product. By the way, have you read Corbin's " Handbook # 8" yet? What is said about his products can be directly applied to RCE's. 8)

Thanks Talon... I think i will go with that. I am just doing a search for all the other componants, then i guess i will place an order. Just need to find out where to get jackets/lead wire etc (i will be in New Zealand soon, so must make sure everything is available at reasonable cost).

All it takes is money, lots of money.

ch4d.com has die sets, quick, to make very reasonable quality jacketed bullets for .44/.357. And in a large, heavy, strong reloading press. Sometimes they are on Ebay for about 1/2.

.30's... grab your scale and weigh some. The target bullets are alot more precise to be more accurate. CH has a die set for hunting bullets (and pistol bullets) of the .30/30 quality. If you really want to go to "match" bullets then it is corbins.com (dave) or rceco.com (richard) or Mr. Blackmon of LA (address in Gun Digest Annual) or ?? Benchrest.com has a couple of other die makers who specialize in match bullet making equipment. Briong money. Carbide if you got the bucks...

These same firms can supply or direct you to suppliers of the jackets, lead wire, etc. Although if you are down under, shipping will be a pain and you should be able to find most locally. Lanolin from sheep? luck.
