NEF Question
« on: November 08, 2005, 09:53:52 AM »
I am considering converting a NEF shotgun to the smokeless barrel that smokelessmuzzleloading.com has. I found a really tight NEF shotgun that is really cheap but has one problem. The hammer will not go to full cock. It looks like all the springs are OK, Hammer, trigger and opening latch. The hammer seems to stop just short of reaching the cock position. Has anyone taken the NEF action apart and is it any more difficut than the Pursuit LT that I did? If I can fix it the conversion would be a fairly reasonable way to get a smokeless rifle to play with.

Keith, ya need to check out the NEF/H&R Centerfire forum, there's a sticky on trigger work and a link to Perklo's trigger download site.... Here's Perlo's site, hit the download...FWIW, I'm guessing the transfer bar is broken. You can order the parts from H&R, Numrich or Brownell's, it's called a lifter and striker.

Thanks guys. I sure love these sites for the amount of knowledge that is available. It seems that no matter what the problem is someone either has had the problem or can guess what it is and direct you to some way to overcome the problem. I have a site for my Suzuki Samurai that is the same way (actually it is a local club but the information and knowledge is priceless). I think I may go get the shotgun and see if I can make it into a smokeless muzzleloader. I'm sure I need at least one more muzzleloader.

Hey Keith, if do it you will really enjoy it. I just built my own about a month ago, I used my H&R 25-06 ultra for the receiver, I went with a 45 cal. I killed a deer with it last week, 215 steps with , get this , NO hold over. I think it is moving a 200sst around 2600fps. 2" high at 100 and dead on at 200. 1" groups are regular.

Just a caution on the smokeless muzzleloader on the SB1 shotgun frame, might not be a good idea with the pressures Ricci is running, that's gotta be upwards of 35kcup+, his SB2 frame will take it easily, the SB1 probably won't, at least not very many times.

That's right the SB1 shotgun frame is made of IRON not the steel of the SB2 frame.  However since all the pressure is contained completely inside the barrel and all you are getting is the recoil force, a 30-06 has less kick than full house 3" magnum 12GA shells.  HHHMMM.......
I aim to please - but often miss.

That's true....The new frames since '98 are all steel, the difference now is the SB2 are heat treated, the SB1 aren't.

I found the site and attempted to download the two files. My computer claims it can not open the files. I guess I am not enought of a puter nerd to make it work. I will have to look elsewhere for the information on disassembly. Perko does not give any other option and there is no link to talk to the site. If you do not know how to massage the computer jargon you can't get the information out. I have downloaded other directions and a complete sewing machine manual and they were all more straight forward than the way the Perko stuff is set up. Thanks anyway I'm sure someone can do it; but not me. I find the comment about the action not being strong enough a little confusing as the pressure is in the barrel and the action only has to carry the recoil???

Yup, I agree, that's my mistake, not thinking again!!

You need adobe reader for the .pdf files, I just downloaded em again, so the site is working. If you don't have Adobe reader, there's a link to  download it there.  If you do and still had problems downloading them, I can email them to you, they're a little over 2Mb total. PM me your email address and I'll send em to ya if you want em. His instructions are well worth the effort, they're extremely detailed with great pics of an entire disassembly and the tools required.

I have Adobe reader but for some reason either my software or the download is not working. It is probably because I am old enough that I learned this computer stuff by myself and I am a P### Poor teacher.  If you can send it to me email I would appreciate that . My email is not private and I have posted it before; it is klewisinc@msn.com. Thanks for the offer. I tried to access other sources for the instructions and all the links go back to the same site.

Keith, I sent em, but the file size was over 3Mb, probably due to formatting. If that's too big for your ISP, I'll send em separately and see if that works.

Haven't seen em yet but could still be in the que waiting to get to my email. Sometimes there is significant delay. Thanks again for the effort; I will be watching to see if it gets through. I really need the disassembly instructions. I am not so interested in the trigger job part if it is seperate from the disassembly. I sort of know how to do the trigger job as I did one on my Pursuit which was absolutely terrible when I got it. I guess the trigger was over 12 pounds. I could only pull it twice before my finger got so sore I could not do more.
