Purchasing a new NEF/H&R

I have never handled one of these rifles, but for the price and the extra barrels one can get for them they are hard to resist!   I want to purchase the Handi-rifle and their website claims that they come with scope mounting rails.  What does this mean exactly?  Does this mean that all I will need to get are the scope rings, while the base is already supplied with the rifle?  Will Weaver style rings fit on the rails?   Replies will be appreciated!

The scope rail will probably be already mounted on the barrel. Yes, basically it means that all you need are Weaver style rings and a suitable scope for your rifle. Make sure the rings are high enough to cater to your scopes rear bell. Some here will take off the scope rail and clean out the screw holes and put some Lok-Tight in them or Super Glue, just to make sure they are secure.

nyhunter:  Yes when they say base included it is a base screwed onto the barrel.  That base is for weaver type rings.  Yes rings and a scope is all you will need to buy extra.  But you will need to take the screws out of the base before mounting the scope, and put a little locktite on the screws and retighten them.  Sometimes they are not as tight as they should be from the factory, and will work loose after using if not tightened first.

Here's a bit of a close up of it on my 338-06..this one is the Ultra base which is a bit longer than the standard base...and has a support screw up on the front of it...



Sorry...don't have a picture of the whole thing for a close up..but you can see how they go on atleast..

Mac,didn't you give some advice about the screw that supports the base....something about it wasn't supposed to touch the barrel or only slightly touch it..... i can't find the post now,but i'll need to know in a couple of days  (I hope)   :D

Wow, I'm really impressed with this NEF/H&R forum.  One can get answers along with photos in minutes!  Thanks for your help.  I want to get one in .308.  I wish it had a little bit of a longer barrel on it, but I think a 22 inch will definitely do.  Have used a Remington 700 in .270 for all of my hunting for about 20 years, but now I sort of want a single-shot challenge. As I've said for the price how can someone resist one of these rifles?  I always liked the Ruger #1, but they are not exactly cheap these days and from what I've heard probably won't shoot too much better than one of these NEF/H&R's that are a fraction of the price!  You could get a NEF/H&R with several barrels for the price of one Ruger.

nyhunter,you can get a .270 ultra comp barrel.......it's 22" with an extra inch for the muzzle brake(comp + compensated)
also,any ultr barrel will fit so you have the option of the 26" 25-06...and some others I think come in 24"...but someone else will hafta confirm that and tell ya what calibers they come in  :grin:

Yes, I know they are available in .270, but I think I would like a .308 since I have always thought of it as the perfect deer round for the type of area I hunt in.  The .270 has served me real well over the years, but I like the compactness of the .308 round that would go along nicely with the compactness of the Handi-rifle.
