New to late season Bow hunting
« on: November 09, 2005, 08:30:47 AM »
Iv never hunted after the rifle season with my bow up here in MN. Iv got meat in the freezer now and I wanna go back sometime in December here and try my luck later in the game after things quiet back down. Can anybody gimme some pointers as to how the deer are acting up aroudn the time when it comes to calls, rattling etc?

Cheers nick[/img]

I have not had a problem after gun season when bow hunting. The deer usually settle down pretty quick to routines ... but I dont bow hunt as much after gun season as my routine does not get me too far away from the fireplace

There are some good articles in the hunting magazines on late season deer hunting.
I would go with their main food souce in your area they are probably mostly feeding and bedding close to the best food. Trying to get ready for winter.
If you can scout out some place that deer are feeding and see if you can find where they are bedding and get in between food and bedding area would be your best shot right now. Do not know when the secound rut is in your area if it is on now might try rattling some.

First key in on food sources. They will not stray far away from them this time of year. Second... keep tabs on the does. The unbred does should be coming back into estrus soon and the bucks will still have love on their minds. Last week the bucks I saw were still very hot on the does. Third... Watch for changes in the weather patterns if a storm is coming get out there. The deer will be moving early and so concentrated on feeding that it is a bit easier to get close.
Just another worthless opinion!!

Want some great action?  If you live in an area where there is logging, ask the loggers if they mind if you hunt in the area.  Make sure to stay out of their way etc.... should not be hard since most logging operations are fairly large.  Wear some snow camo and go sit by some runways coming into the cuttings.  You will be in for the time of your life.  The cuttings are deer magnets.
