hey guys, I just found this site and I've got a couple of questions about barrel interchangabilities, I've got an topper chambered 22 hornet with the manlicher stock that I bought about 20+ yrs back and I'd like to have a few more chamberings for it.

1. will I have to buy a newer NEF model to get the extra barrels, I understand that they are a bit different from the older H&Rs.

2. can barrels be interchanged like on a T/C rifle or do they have to be fitted to the receiver.

3. who sells the replacement barrels.

First off,WELCOME

,this is a GREAT forum
to answer your questions the best i can....
1.Yes,you need a newer receiver to change out the barrels
2.Once you get your rifle,you can send it back to the factory for the barrel accesory program (make sure you buy an SB2 receiver,ultra rifle or handi rifle)It can be fitted with a number of centerfire chambered barrels and shotgun and muzzleloader barrels.all SB@ receivers accept all barrels stocks and forearms(Tim,correct me if i'm wrong about this)...once you get them it only requires a screwdriver to change out the barrels
3. You have to send in the receiver to the factory to be fitted

I've seen the handi and ultras, but which rifle is the SB2 receiver on?, I'm looking to get the 45-70, 223 and add a wildcat in later.

when you send the receiver back to the factory, do you have to have an FFL send it for you?

Welcome to GreyBeards. Good to have you with us :agree:
The SB2 is any centerfire rifle receiver and the Ultra Slug Hunter 12 and 10 ga Shotguns. All the rest of the rifles, shotguns and muzzleloaders are SB1 receivers with little variation. And to answer your 2nd question, nope you don't need an FFL to send your own receiver back to the factory and to have it shipped back to you.

Pretty much right on, but I will caution you to make sure the frame serial number of the gun you buy has a N or later second letter which denotes the year of mfr, '99 in this case. First letter will be N or H for NEF or H&R. They won't fit any high pressure barrels, those marked with an asterisk in the barrel list, to a frame built before then. '98 or M might be the cut off, I can't remember for sure, but a call to them with serial number will confirm what barrels they will fit. Neither the .45-70 or the .223 are marked with an asterisk, but it's always nice to have a later frame in case you want one of the newer barrels.....like a fluted .243!! :wink:

Actually the SB2 shotgun receiver used on 10ga and 12ga ultras is only for them and is not the same as an sb2 rifle receiver. They really should call it anSB3 or something. The only thing that you can have fit to it are 10ga and 12ga ultra barrels. Welcome to GBO.

Yeah that's true. It's misleading and confusing to someone that's just trying to find out a few details about barrel fitting. Hopefully one day we will have the option of buying barrels at Walmart or through catalogs, like TC. I suppose we can dream............

well I did a bit of online shopping and found a NEF survivor SB2 in 308 win., not like I need another 308 but the price is right, and I looked on NEFs site, so all I need to do is call them with my order for the extra barrels and mail the receiver in for fitting right?

I believe you have to send in the receiver AND forend for fitting with
a new barrel. Basically, take the barrel off your present rifle and mail
the rest in with the proper form (downloaded from NEF site) stating
which barrel you want along with check or M.O. or creditcard #.

They (H&R/NEF) ask that the the stock and forearm be sent in with the reciever to get a new barrel fitted but many here have stopped sending them because of the high incidence of scratched and dented stocks returned. Many here now send just the reciever in for a new barrel....<><.... :wink:
