22-250 varminter problem!
« on: November 10, 2005, 06:18:27 AM »
A friend of mine just bought a 22-250 fluted varminter, first time at the range had trouble locking up and after firing very hard to break open. Used factory ammo and chamber had been polished. Sent it back to the factory, got it back and we went to the range today, fired factory ammo, now it is hard to lock up with the fired empty brass. Plus they did not return all the parts, such as the hammer spur. Has anyone had this problem or with NEF not fixing something? He is not very happy right now. :cry:

It is normal to not lock up easily on fired brass.  It has been expanded to what ever size the chamber is plus whatever the frame streches during firing.

dobber,
I hope when you said "all the parts" you were talking about the hammer spur and it alone. A call to customer service will get that corrected a.s.a.p. I'm sure it was just an oversight. I have found the C/S folks to be very accommodating. :D

When he sent it back he had them fit a 223 barrel for it also. They didn't send a hammer spur for either barrel and the screws for the adjustable butt plate didn't make it back either. NEF has got their worst nightmare with Tom , they need to make it right. I hope they will. I have one H&R and a NEF with no problems.

Ask him to be nice and he'll get great service, if he isn't, they won't be either. They have bent over backwards to make things right for many here, all it takes is a little communication and patience. :wink: I know they make mistakes from time to time, I've dealt with em myself, by I've always been real happy with the results.

Dirtdobber47;

I too have a 22-250 UVF and when I first got it, it was really stiff to break open. Man I could shoot some of those Winchester Supremes and could hardly break it open. Primers were flattened with factory stuff, I thought I had an undersized chamber. But I was also shooting in 90+ degree high humidity weather. It now has 550 rounds through it, and the cooler weather, it's as smooth as silk.
I was going to send off for a 223 Fluted barrel and some camo stocks for it. But now I'm a little leary since this happened to your friend. My trigger pull is 3.1lbs. and I'd be afraid the factory might make it heavier if I sent my reciver in.
Hope he gets it worked out.
As far as the factory stocks (Choate), it feels great off hand, but from the bench, I'd rather use the Monte Carlo stocks. Plus my groups shrunk by 50% using my standard NEF Plastic stocks over the Choate.

i wonder if that rifle has been chambered to the absolute minimum SAAMI spec' -- or maybe even less -- creating a problem with closing the action and then generating too much working pressure when the cartridge is fired.

if you get the rifle to a 'smith he/she can check the chamber with a gauge to see if my theory has any merit.

take care,
