Stashing Money! Have You Given It Any Thought?
« on: November 10, 2005, 08:59:20 AM »
I have given it "a little" thought.  In the event of a disaster, you might be out of work, and the banks could all look like crispy critters too!

I've taken to saving all my pocket change for years.  I've probably got about $200 in mixed change put away in the fireproof safe.  I also used to save ALL my $1.00 bills as well.  The theory is that using small bills and change won't entice too many theives to come my way.

The problem with storing so much pocket change is weight.  You'd have a hard time back packing all that.  Now I'm thinking about burying some in the mountains at my "get away" location.

Susan B.'s!  I keep a couple of rolls stashed, they're not much for starting fires, but at least I don't feel like I'm broke.

Interesting subject........Watching the news after the hurricane and flood in Louisiana we saw long lines at the few surviving gas stations and markets that weren't picked clean by looters.  Also saw most banks closed and no ATM's available w/o power to run them.

I think some buried cash would be a smart thing to do.....just remember streets, yards and first floors were generally under water, so if you plan on stashing cash, pick a place that won't blow away or not buried under water and debris!?????  Ummmm, gee, I wonder where that would be, in your gun safe?

Not all have need to be concerned with flooding. Some have to be concerned with earthquakes. Most will have the opportunity to obtain cash in some way unless there is a true shtf happening.
Under this scenario money may be absolutely useless.
I have no suggestions to foolproof/thwart Murphy.

PS I understand Col. is cool and dry but how do you bury and keep in working order?

3 inch PVC pipe (schedule 80).  Two end caps.  One schrader valve.  One vacuum pump.  One FOD bag with silica gel.  Install valve on the end cap.  Stuff pipe with goodies.  Assemble pipe and end caps.  Let glue dry.  Vacuum pump.  Cap off valve.  Bury and cover up.  Good for MANY years!

This works great for ammo as well except one modification:

Add a second valve and leave it open.  Fill up container with compressed nitrogen and close valve.

I have a friend that has a bunch of gold and silver coins. He has them in a spot that only his wife knows about (hope he trust her a hell of a lot lol) Anyway if things get so bad that paper money will not work gold and silver should still be worth something.

I have a small stash handy at home. Read small/very small/little bit, not worth the risk to obtain it from me, so I feel comfortable being able to get out if money is still any good.
best thing is to get out soon enough. not like I did it, the last time.

I have a small fire safe with important documents etc.  My goal is $1000 in cash, but $500 is what Im at now.  Mixed bills......

Its been handy.  I like to buy guns, it makes it very handy to make a deal when you have a little cash on hand.

I have a question for those who store gold coins or just gold in general. In a crisis situation. Who gets to decide what the gold coin is actually worth. It would seem to me standard currentcy would be of more value if money if any kind was worth anything at all. I would personally place more value in things like ammo, knives, trade quality guns and storeable food. To me gold is about as valuable in a crises as a large (hungry) guard dog. Useful items (including a smaller more alert dog).

Well I would say the person with the gold. If you was really hungry and someone had a hamburger you might decide it is well worth a golf coin for it.
To me if such a case came up where I would need to use a stash like that chances are todays cash would not be all that good. But things like gold coins will always be worth something to someone. Back in history after the civil War the souths cash was worthless. It would have taken a wheelbarrow of it to buy a shack of flour. Just think if something happened and the US government was no longer there. The US money would be worthless and no matter how much of you had saved up chances are you would still be broke.

I think I'll just concentrate on storable food, guns and ammo, and smaller dog with a smaller appetite.

Gold, like most things man has based an economy upon, has no intrinsic worth beyond what we assign. While it is quite handy in the electronics industry, and the jeweler's of the world wish us to believe it's the only way to buy true love, it has no other real uses. In a collapsed society, items of real worth will be those that we can use. Unpolluted water, food, ammunition, any number of manufactured goods such as soap and toothpaste will be much more in demand than gold. It will be many years, if ever in our lifetimes, (depending on the severity of the situation) before gold is used again as a currency. Fishing weights and musket balls will be about all that gold would be good for.
But wait, you say. What about something other than a system-wide collapse, say a hurricane or other natural disaster of limited duration? Surely a stash of gold or pre-1965 dimes and quarters will come in handy then?
Wrong again.
While it is true that unscrupulous shop owners will charge many times the going rate for goods and services in such a situation, how many of them do you suppose will take your word on how much a Krugerand is worth? How many people, outside of coin collectors and survivalists, even know about the value of pre-1965 silver coins? And even if they do, how do you propose to buy a loaf of bread with a two ounce bar of gold? Take a wheelbarrow along to cart home your change in greenbacks? Far better, if you live in flood- or tornado-prone areas, is to have a wad of bills to supplement your food and fuel reserves. As I said above, anything that you use on a daily basis will likely be in demand after a disaster, whether man-made or otherwise. Soap, paper towels, toilet paper, vitamins, toothpaste and toothbrushes; all common, everyday items that we take for granted now which may be impossible to scavenge. And there surely won't be any more being made.

Depending on how bad things are, U.S. currency may be worthless anyway.
Stashing away some goods for barter may be a better Idea.
Things such as Silver, Whisky, medical goods, Lighter fuel etc.
Things that you can trade to someone for what you want.

You can invest your money in current gold and silver values but, if the bottom ever falls out, you will not know what that 20 dollar gold piece is worth, and neither will any one else. But, bartering goods will be invaluabe. Knives, lighters, canned fruit and vegatables ect. Ammo, cheap guns all that would make more sense. It's kinda like that big bad dog that everybody wants to help protect the family. I take a small ALERT one I can keep quite if I need him to be. And he's cheaper to feed. Money would be useless. Just my thoughts. ;)

I would leave the guns and ammo out of trade goods.
Those would allow the other folks to simply take your stuff.
This whole thread would depend on how bad it actually was.
Lets get some "What would you do If" scenerios going.
