VX III 6.5-20X50 30mm. Long Range
« on: November 10, 2005, 04:12:33 PM »
Im thinkin about gettin this scope for a .243. i would mainly be doin prairie dog huntin and long and short range targets with it.  Thats why i was thinkin of gettin it in the Varmint Hunters Reticle.  Ive been studyin up on em and they sound great but with one exception. you have to use this power selector triangle for the load your shootin for it to work right. so say i am shootin a .243 with a 58 grain V-Max moly at 3750 fps with a 200 yard zero. the leupold chart says to use the larger triangle. which puts the scope at 16X instead of at the full 20X capability. and when youre shootin a 100 grain bullet at 2900 fps. with a 200 yard zero you have to put it on the smaller triagle which puts the scope at 12X! do yall think i should still get it or not because of this reason?? any opinions or suggestions or any experiences with this scope or this recticle would be greatly appreciated!! thanks,
joseph

Welcome to the Dark Side of the Moon.  I shoot a Vari-X III 6.5*20 with a mildot on my varmit rifle in .243.  With Mills, you can compute your holdover as per your BC and velocity then just have your little chart which I tape to the stock and to the bottom of my range finder.  Works for me.  As for the varmit reticle, those graduated lines have specific minutes of angle so you can figure out the drop with your loads. line one below the crosshairs may not be 300 meters and line two may not be 400.  Might be 250 and 375 for example with those kind of hyper velocities.  But, it ought to work just fine.

Either way, for P-Dogs, having a spotter is required b/c he can call your shots and then you can just vary your holdover for elevation and wind to account for your misjudgment and then you can fire for effect once you are laid in.

Some days, when we are just on a killing spree, it might take two, three or four rounds to get the first hit on a particular hill with several dogs out where we shoot b/c of the wind and ranges pushing between 300 and 500 yards, but then you can get all the other dogs usually on that hill with single shots.  We don't really bother doing any ranging or calculations.  Might fire 300 rounds.

Other days, we take our 300 mag senderos and calculate every shot with a rangefinder and the wind meter, then we try for one shot kills. Might fire 40 rounds only.

Depends on you mood and the purpose of that trip.

Thanks conrad! So which reticle would be more precise for the long range shooting the mil dot or the Varmint hunter?  If i do get it in mil dot will i have to do a reticle change or can you get it with the mil dot reticle already there? what did you have to do and where did you get yours? thanks,
joseph

you can get it with the mildot reticle for sure on almost any leupold.  I have the Mark 4 tactical with exposed knobs on one rig, one older tactical with elevated knobs, and one standard scope.  All are varxIII with mildots.

My cousin has the boon and crocket reticle on his elk gun.

I think the varmit reticle would be vey cool though.

The mildots work well once you figure it out.  for example on my 300 mag (shooting 180 grain btsp at 3100 FPS MV) I zero at 200 and hold .5 mills high at 300 meters, 1.25 mills high at 400 and 2 mills high at 500.  I can remember those figures fairly easy for fast shots.  I look at my little chart once I get further out.

Post your email address and I'll send you my table that I use for elevation and wind.

I may very well get that varmit reticle myself.  It should really be trick once you figure out the ranges at which the various loads impact in relation to the marks.  That is easy on an excel spreadsheet.

Like I said, it kind of depends on your style.  That varmit reticle ought to be perfect for running and gunning spree shooting.

Thanks a lot conrad!  The reason why i asked about the mildot is because at SWFA (riflescopes.com)  the VX-III 6.5-20X50 doesnt come in mildot.  My email is joseph_persinger@baylor.chattanooga.net.  Thanks a lot!

conrad, i looked at leupold.com and the VX-III 6.5-20X50 long range target scope doesnt come in the mildot reticle! it didnt show up on leupolds list of reticles for that particular model! where did you get yours? if i can't get the mildot im sure that the Varmint hunters will do just fine! thanks,
joseph

I don't have the LR configuartion.  My Mark 4 (2005) [Pretty much the LR] has it and my old tactical (1997) has it.  My 3rd had the duplex but i sent it in and leupold installed the mildots for $80 (I think).

Check these guys out too for prices.  Think Don is asking $659 for the scope you wanted.
