Grips/Sights for a 686
« on: November 10, 2005, 07:05:14 PM »
I just bought my first handgun, a used 686-4.

It shoots well, but the recoil bothers me after a few rounds.  I think the open backstrap is making it worse than it needs to be.  Are their rubber grips availible that do NOT have the open backstrap?  I can't seem to find any that state this.

Also, the orange on the stainless steel sight is a little difficult to see at times against the target.  The front sight seems to be fixed, but is there a way to replace what looks like an orange insert or is this a "mojor operation" and how much would replacing it with something more visible run?

You could install a set of Pachmayer Presentation grips. I find these to be very comfortable.

Try applying a little flat black paint to the rear edge of the front sight. This is not a permanent fix but I find it last a while before a touch up is required.

I thought about just painting the front sight, might not be a bad idea.

Are the presentation grips hard?  I think the soft rubber grips on the gun might be making the open backstrap even worse by giving during recoil.  If the backstrap was covered with a rubber grip, or it was a hard surface all the way across, it might not be as bad.  I don't remember having a problem with the checkere wood grips on my dad's 357.  I'm not sure if I shot it nearly as many times though.

Nevermind, I finally found what I wanted in the FAQ section on their website.  Thanks!
