Yesterday talked to N.E.F. about the Whelen and other Q's ..
« on: November 10, 2005, 08:01:30 PM »
Yesterday a.m. I called to chat with N.E.F. about their stocks / prices, how many barrels can be ordered at any one time, etc.  Also asked about the new .35 Whelen production run ......

Whelen's will be available "hopefully" after the first quarter of '06.

Thw will be 22 inches in length, not 26 and that's not subject to change.

Barrel contour is their normal or standard contour.

Only new caliber that will be added to the line-up next year is the Whelen.  Nothing else is scheduled.

It was Trisha who told me all the above.

Also, the 7.62X39 barrel is also on a standard contour, "Topper deluxe Classic" barrels are now available through the barrel access program - but no part number, just describe it!

The most perplexing thing I was told is the "complementary trigger adjustment is free," if asked for of course.  I told them I heard on several boards (not just this one) that a trigger adjustment had to be asked for, but everyone agreed it also cost $15.

Go figure!  Told them folks are going to be confused.  They didn't seem to care.

They did say 3 1/2 pounds of pull is the lightest they adjust to.

Cheers!

I have had my triggers adjusted for free also, they never charged me for the adjustments. Also at one time I spoke to a rep and told me the  record number of barrels ever ordered fitted to one frame was either 11 or 13!!! I do not remember the exact number but it was one if those, a  substantial number of fitted barrels!!!!....<><....

Everything is subject to change....just take a look back at the 7.62x39 original goof up.....these aren't in production yet...and up untill they are...they can quite easily make them 24" 26" or even 28 " if they want...

Couger, were you posting that the 22" barrels on the Whelen weren't subject to change based on what they (NEF) told you? If so then I guess we'll have to wait and see. Personally I'd prefer the 22" barrel, it's what makes a Handi handy, IMHO.:D

.308 .......

Good moniker as well as a great cartridge!   :)

Yes to your question, Trisha was pretty definite that 22 inches is the planned [and decided] length of the new Whelen production run.  I have no idea whether she's only a mouth piece /sales / PR person, or takes part in the decision process.

However as pointed out above, until barrels are actually coming out changes [miracles?] can happen.  But speaking for myself, I'm not going to hold my breath.

I agree the 22" is a handier length than some others, but I also like 24" as a more "standard" length (even a "rifleman's length, esp in a bolt gun), although I realize some will say a 'rifleman's length' should be 26 inches, at least in a single shot rifle.  There are plenty of good arguments for all of the above.  FWIW.

I wouldn't put to much confidence in anyone at H&R unless you talk to Gordon, Jennifer or Mary...and John when he's there. There has been a lot of misinformation given out by help at H&R when they are short staffed, haven't seen anything from this Trish, she might have been the person that told MSP they were out of Ultracomp barrels!!.... so I don't know how reliable and knowledgable she is. Since Mac had a talk with the Director of Marketing of Marlin(H&R's boss, so to speak since Marlin owns H&R/NEF) yesterday, it's quite possible that we'll be seeing some changes before the short barreled Whelen is available, and maybe some other options.....hopefully!

Had a real interesting talk with the Director of Marketing of Marlin this afternoon.I was trying to impress upon him...that having some of the longer barrels would be a benifit to us Handi-holics...especially in the 270...308...30-06..35 Whelen...I ask him if it were possible to make them available as a barrel accessory items too.. for everyone.. since they start out in the longer lenghts to begin with....I also told him of this forum(he was already aware of it).and he said they would have to discuss this in their meetings...and see if it were possible...so...if you could ...would you...and which one...I think a a 26" bull barreled fluted 308 would be a blast to own...same too for the 26" 270 and 30-06...especially since I plan on converting one early next year anyway...I know you can only vote once...but you can post to this as well...

Quickdtoo,

You definitely sound familiar with the office staff and personnel at the headshed, certainly more than me.  Jennifer is who answered my call initially, but she sounded rather preoccupied as I tried to talk to he before she transferred me.

Whether 22 or 26 inches, I'll definitely be going for a Whelen too regardless of the length.  And of course what finally shows up [available] and when will indeed be the bottom line.

Some barrels I'm interested in are for long-term use and acquisition ('06, .223, .45/70, 12 gauge, etc.), but some are for experimentation - without having to acquire complete and full size rifles (7.62X39, .204 Ruger, .280Rem, and now the Whelen!).  This is one of the huge advantages/features I see in the Handi-Rifle, but the many different stocks/forends avaliable also enhance the versatility of these singleshots, too.  And some designs are downright ingenious.  My $.02.

Jennifer is very knowledgable and wears many hats there, she can be a bit short sometimes, but is really a sweety if you give her a chance and she has the time, which doesn't happen a lot due to their small staff and great work load.

With a little luck, let's hope they expand the barrel length options to include both short and long barrels, the wheels at Marlin are in motion to achieve this goal. Maybe Diana can help out if her health has improved. Sure would be nice to hear from her again. Our prayers are with ya Diana, if you're checkin in on us.
