Trashco PDP3
« on: November 11, 2005, 02:19:55 AM »
I bought a Tasco PDP3, 30mm red dot sight for my SRH 454. The piece of crap was broken right out of the box and never made it onto the revolver. I should have known better.

I'm looking for a quality red dot sight that can be mounted in the factory 30mm rings so that it can easily be put on & off the gun.

Any suggestions?

I had about the same problem with a brand new BSA red Dot. It lasted exactly 3 rounds before the projector screen lens came loose. This was mounted on a Ruger MK III 22 LR.

I decided to spend a little more money (BSA was $35) and get something decent. I bought a 30mm Millett for $106 and have been very happy with it.

If I were installing one on a heavy hitter like a 454, I would go with the Aim Point. Mounting a Red Dot on a Ruger SRH is a trick. You either have to find one with a turret short enough to fit between the rings or better yet, buy the Weaver style base that mounts in the Ruger scope mount notches. Then you can mount most any length of red dot or scope.

Trashco is packed up and heading back. Just ordered a MatchDot built by UltraDot. We'll see how this one works out. I'll keep ya posted.

You will like the Ultra dot. I have one on my BFR in 500 Mag. I have well over 2000 rounds down the tube and it is holding up well.  I have a Ultra dot 30mm as a back up, but I have not needed it.  :D

The bottom line is that you can't expect a quality sight for that kind of money. $100 and up is what quality red dots cost.

After spending 62 years on the planet I've pretty much come to the conclusion that, given a bit of prudent caution, you generally get what you paid for.

I originally intended to try an UltraDot but both MidwayUSA & MidsouthShootersSupply apparently discontinueded them. I wasn't sure they were still available.

Well, I located an UltraDot dealer and ordered one of their MatchDots for $179. Just got back from vacation and the MatchDot was waiting to be mounted on my SRH 454, but guess what - The sight will not fit on a SRH!

The factory Ruger rings are aprox 1.9" apart and the square portion of the MatchDot is aprox 2.1".  :?

This red dot idea is turning out to be a big pain in the a$$.  :x

:D Hey there shooters,

The following IS JUST IMHO!

The one trashco I had was just that, trash.

Not sure if I was just un-lucky or if those folk who seem to like the trashco line have just never looked through a good scope.

Mine was a 4x12 A.O. and I got just what I paid for, a piece of junk!

Once was enough!

Keep em coming!

I've got a TRASHCO PROpoint mounted it on a 357mag.  It lasted less than 6rnds.  Now you can pick your choice of "POINTS" to shoot at, as the scope has at least half a dozen red dots you can take you choice of.

I need to replace it and was thinking of the sights that are single plane.
Does anyone know which brands hold up and what kind of price range they run in?
