I found out what a golf ball can do to a pressure treated 4” x 4” post today when firing my cannon for some Veteran’s Day salutes. Just for grins I casually aimed the cannon at a corner of my wood shed about 40 yards away, not thinking I would hit it, and if so that a golf ball would bounce off the beam without doing much of any damage. Boy was I surprised.

I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of that golf ball. Tiger, eat your heart out.

Impressive!
Apparently your cannon and you are better shots than you thought.

Wow John, that was one hard hitting projectile.  I can even see the dimples from the ball, marking the wood.  Now, what was the powder charge for that shot and what was the approximate distance.  Also, thanks for sharing some very nice pictures! Blaster (Bob in So. CO)

Ouch!!!!!! :o  So, now for the big question. How did the golf ball fare??? Did it go to pieces or, rebound?

I guess this is proof that you need a safe soft backstop with any projectile. :D

Thanks for the photo.
If you make it idiot proof, then, someone will make a better idiot.

Perhaps a preliminary question, "Did you find the golf-ball?"

The distance was about 120 feet. The load was 300 grains of 1Fg. The ball was found scruffed up but intact about 40 feet in front of the beam. I cleaned it up and promptly refired it into my normal back stop, a 15 acre stand of thick woods. It's not often I can reuse much less find a fired golf ball, but I don't recommend this method of projectile recovery!  :)

Powder Keg, one of these days I'm going to cast some lead (or zinc) balls, but I'll haul my cannon down to my target range. I've got a big 6' high dirt berm just out past 100 yards. I'm not firing any "serious" projectiles without a safe back stop, and I've gained newfound respect for the lowly golf ball.

Hey John..... from the looks of that beam I'd say the golf ball also qualified as "serious".  Don't think I'd care to have been standing there.
