Recently became a BFR owner?
« on: November 12, 2005, 03:34:50 AM »
I recently purchased a BFR in 475 Linebaugh from MR.  I had them work the action and lighten the trigger.  I also had them cut the barrel to 4 inches from the front of the frame or 4 1/2 inches.  I had the folks at Eagle Grips make up a set of Buffalo Horn grips to fit my smaller hands.  I have been shooting Buffalo Bore 420 grain "light" loads at 950 fps and a couple of boxes of 420 grainers loaded to 1400 fps.  Those are pretty stiff.  I plan to reload for this caliber as soon as I have a supply of brass and will be using this gun for hunting deer, hogs, bear and hopefully moose.  I would love to hear from anyone with experience with the 475 and especially with the BFR.  I am also looking for an express type set of sights.  I really like the Freedom Arms express sights but they will obviously not fit.  I was going to purchase the FA, but I like the fact that the BFR can safely be carried with alll five rounds.  Thanks for any helpful information or feedback.  :-)

Well welcome to the BFR world. I have one in 500 Mag and it is a great gun in my opinion. Sorry I can't help you with the 475 Linebaugh, but good luck and keep us informed.  :D

I own two.. The 45/70 10 inch, and a D_Max sidewinder 45/410.. Dmax still makes the frames under Magnum Research. Love them both.. I will be getting a smaller grip for the Dmax.. It has finger groves and is too big for my hands.. Great guns.. built like a tank. enjoy..

The BFR is a well made revolver, and is a lot of gun for the money.  I have a 45/70 that has been customized with the Mag-Na-Port Stalker package.  I recently took a nice black bear with this setup (see Avatar).  I have found that I do prefer the Magnum Research (or Pistol Packaging)holster over a sling for ease of carrying.  It also offers more protection for the gun.  Looking to get a cut down .480 or .454 as a backup.  Good hunting. 8)

I like mine more and more, the more I shoot it.  I have found that 420 grainers at about 1,000 fps are very comfortable to shoot and I believe they will be fine to take deer and black bear with.  I added a one ragged hole peep sight last weekend and find I am getting on target much quicker.  I am also hitting better with it well past 50 yards.  Had several 3 shot groups under 3 inches at 60 yards offhand.  For me the weight and balance is better than any sixgun I have ever handled.  Unfortuanately my hunting season this year is going to be spotty at best.  Work activity is extremely busy this year.  (a good thing I guess)  I think I will have to reward myself with a spring hog hunt.  Do you think I will be properly equipped for boar with a 475
