Predators & varmints done traditional
« on: November 12, 2005, 07:43:11 AM »
Been doing all my P&V hunting lately the way I started predator calling over 35 years ago… wearing the Rondy leathers, packing one of my traditional 36 muzzy’s shooting PRB and using only mouth calls I hand carved from antler (still have the first call I carved in late 60’s BTW).   I am really having fun with this since it sure has stepped up the challenge and made it a true one-on-one hunt again that's a win-win experience whether blood is drawn or not.   I retired again 3 months ago, so go mostly during the week to have the open spaces all to myself.   Even so have only scored 3 gray fox (they’re actually pretty dumb) and a big badger called in so far.   Have called quite a few coyotes in too (including doubles), but the area’s I’ve been going to so far are heavily used on weekends by both shooters/callers and desert worshipers.   So they are holding up well beyond the effective range of the small caliber muzzy and open sights.   I could take any of my 45’s, 50’s or the 54 I guess to gain some range, but I’m having way more fun with the 32’s and 36’s getting them up close and personal.   Also called a couple of bobcats well in range BTW, but without tags had to give them a free pass.  I need to start making overnight or week long trips so I can get farther away from the high use areas closer to town.   That’s the new plan as we get further into the season here.

During midday I spot and stock ground squirrels and jacks with one of the 32's.   Great fun as well and some very good practice.

Anyway, if you want a challenging experience, and the chance to bring back what you’ll call some well earned trophies, you might do as I did… leave all the modern marvels, camo, laser guided missile launchers and electronic doodads at home and go traditional.

Great to hear from ya, glad to see you retired & doing what you want to do.
Even though I don't own any of them "tronics" I have to admit to using a centerfire rifle for the most part.
Might be just pure lazyness but I really enjoy calling them in.

Have taken yotes with both them pieces in the Avator but will usually only do this on a whim. Red & Gray fox season came in on the 10th here which means I can hunt around the clock till the end of Jan
I have yet to go out but am on Vac all next week. Your idea is a good one and I may take that Patriot and an (unblooded on Varmints) Vaquero.

:D  Hey glanceblamm, back at ya...

Never used any of the "tronics" either.  Started with "maden" mouth calls and have stayed with them all these years.   Did slip to the specialty pistols about 30 years back and an occasional rifle though, and all the camo.   This is way more fun.

Have fun with your fox season and score a bunch.
