Waterproofing leather boots
« on: November 13, 2005, 03:18:23 AM »
I just bought a pair of Wolverine Gortex Thinsulate boots. I know the Gortex will keep you dry, but I was looking for something to shed the water off the leather so they don't saturate. I used to use SnoSeal to preserve the leather on my old Sorels. Now I hear that this is not a good choice. I was thinking something like Camp Dry or some other silicone based spray. Any thoughts.

Thanks

If it is full grain leather I have not found anything better than Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP.

What did you hear about sno-seal? I use the stuff and thought it did a pretty good job. I've got some money invested in a nice pair of boots and sure wouldn't want to do something to them to damage them.

The chemicals in which the beeswax is suspended in SnoSeal have been reported to damage the welts and stitching in some boots.

I double the vote for Obenauf. I get mine from Russell Moccasin.
I use it on gloves and gear as well as boots. Best stuff of its type I know of.
