Took my first mulie with my 30-06 Encore!
« on: November 13, 2005, 09:37:32 AM »
Saturday the 12th I shot my first Mule deer at 136 yards (ranged it after I took the shot) down hill 30 degree slope, with short Safari Stix for my rest. I was sitting down against the hill and rested my hands on my knees and the forearem of the Pistol in the shooting stix.  The deer was a big bodied 2x2 ....not a big rack but thats ok by me.  At the shot the Mulie stood up out of his bed and took one step and rolled down the short mound he was lying on.  The bullet (Hornady light magnum 165 grain Interbond @2700 FPS) went through the top right of his ribcage and through his heart out the left armpit and broke his left knee before burying itself in the ground.

As I was cleaning him out I took his heart out and saw the hole...wow you could fit 2 fat fingers right through the center of it ...I took some neat pictures of the "hole" event but I do not know how to post them. If someone knows how let me know please.

Anyway I was really happy with my pistol and its first kill.  30-06 AWESOME AS USUAL !!

Congratulations - great shooting.  That caliber in an Encore is great - I got the first one to hit town, still have it, still love it!

Congratulations :D
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

How is the recoil? Are you using full loads or mild loads?

The recoil is fine ...I am using for now FACTORY Hornady Light Magnum 165 grain Interbond bullets @ 2700 FPS.  My Barrel is a 15 inch Heavy barrel from the T/C Custom shop.  I have a 2-6 power Bushnell 3200 Elite mounted with 3 rings on the T'SOB 6 screw mount.  The Barrel is UNPORTED...I dont want my ears to kill me after shooting a few rounds in the field at animals...which by the way this load is as hot as you can get and the noise and recoil is fine for me...  The Gun at the shot comes up about 30-35 degrees off bore line and a slight twist to the right but it is very manageable and fun to shoot at the range as well.  no sore web of the hand.  I think the heavy barrel is much of the reason.
