Shotgun action strength
« on: December 02, 2002, 04:49:28 AM »
I always read (on this site and elsewhere) about the merits of various rifle actions, including strength, safety in terms of gas escape if a case rupture occurs, etc. However, I don't think I have ever read anything about shotgun actions. If someone knows of a specific shotgun forum I should pose this question at, please let me know.

I have a Browning Citori over-under, a Benelli Field 90 auto, a Remington 870 pump, and an Ithaca 37 pump. All these are newer guns (no more than 7 years old). What is the safest action in terms of strength and gas escape in case of rupture?

I'm not aware of any special considerations give to escaping gases in shotguns. The pressures are usually in the 10,800 LUP or lower range. Far lower than the 50,000-65,000 CUP/PSI of rifles.

I remember one case head separtion of a factory Federal case in a Remington 3200 many years ago. I wasn't even aware it happed until I opened the action.
