.17 Aguila
« on: March 05, 2003, 09:48:24 AM »
Any body seen one yet? (.17 Aguila) It appears to be
a much shorter round than the .17 Hornady!
Had them advertised along with a High Standard
semi auto pistol!  Maybe someone will be able
to afford to "PLINK" with this .17 rimfire, Unlike the
Hornady!

I have never heard of it and I did a check on the Aquila web site and they do not list it. So I do not know if it is so new it is not listed yet or is some one pulling your leg? If you can find proof of it please post it as I am sure it would be interest to others. Jim

Retail price came through on this cartridge. I got an e-mial from Alan at Hi Standard and the retail for the 17 Hi Standard Rimfire will be $4.95/box of 50. High standard is shipping barrels and completed weapons and the ammo is to be out within two weeks for distribution. Good news for we rimfire guys. (And I have 40 boxes coming!) ~Andrew

Thats from Andrew on the Marlin forum.  They 17 Aguila is now known as the 17HS (High-Standard).  Its the 22LR case necked down to 17 with a 20 grain HP bullet at about 1850fps.

This really confuses me as WHY? I can see the other 17 Hornady some what as it is more faster than a 22 mag and that gets the speed buffs excited  but this 17 HS you are talking about  is smack dab in the 22 mag area as far as velocity goes and I am sure that the 22 mag's specs will exceed this round as far as velocity and power.  I pay $ 5.50 for my 22 mag rounds and can buy them just about anywhere and I do not consider a 4.50 a bargain for plinking ammo.  I do not see this round as probably being easy to get. I was just at the gunstore today and they were out of 17 Hornady again they can get guns easier than the bullets. So all I can see this round doing is just mudding up the waters more. I guess I would not  want to buy a gun made for this round  and or  barrels for other guns for a round that I am sure will not be as accepted as the 17 Hornady. The Hornady may stick around due to the sales it has had and I may wrong on the fate of this round but I do not think so as it has nothing to offer over a 22 mag, even less.  It also does not have much over the Hyper velocity 22 LR rounds which are a lot cheaper than 4.50 a box. In jawin' at the range, a guy who burns a lot of rimfire told me he can't wait for the necked down LR, because it will use the same Hornady spitzer as the .17hmr and possibly take a quantum leap in accuracy for the long rifle case.

dunno, my biggest issue with accuracy is the guy behind the sights. Where can I get these old eyes "accurized."

I,v read a report that the 17 Aguila HS can be fired in the 17HM2 chamber but the 17 HM2 will not fit into the 17 A HS chamber. The 17 Gr.V-Max bullet at 2,100 FPS out of the 17 HM2 should be flatter shooting. Sited in at 100 Yds the 17 Gr.bullet would be   25 Yds. -0.16,  50 Yds. +0.6, 75 Yds. +0.7,  100 Yds. 0.0, 125 Yds. - 1.62, and - 4.31 inches at 150 Yds.   Has any one have drop tables on the 20 Gr.17A HS bullet ?

regarding the balistics of 17 aguila
« Reply #8 on: July 28, 2004, 07:06:28 PM »
the balistics of the 17aguila is if u zero it in at 50 yards it will rise .04 inches at 25 yards and drop .04 inches at 75 yards...and my gun smith told me that the 17m2 is slightly longer than the aguila. but , it is so small there aint much difference . he said in a automatic gun there will be no problem in shooting them together but if u have say a single shot such as a nef or h@r u might have a problem ,or a bolt action. because it closes up tightly and in automatics there is a slight variance in the chamber.

The problem with shooting the 17Lr in say a 10/22 is the bolt will open to soon if all you do is a barrel change out. The testing on the 17Aguila ammo showed that buy adding a shim to the hammer spring or changing it out for an extra power hammer spring will fix that but Per a post on RFC from a teck at CCI you may need more withthe 17M2 and at this point Ruger is looking at a new bolt with more mass. I'd think an extra power bolt guild rod spring and hammer spring will fix the problem.
