varget for both .223 and .243?
« on: November 14, 2005, 04:33:18 PM »
what do you guys think?

i am thinking of a 55 grain bullet for the .223 and an 85-95 grain deer bullet for the .243.

I would think it would work for both but i would like to hear input from guys who know.

I'm not too fond of Varget in my 223 loads exept for the heaviest bullets, and even then Rel-7 is a way better powder in my opinion.

Now for the 243, I love Varget in most bullet weights. It's clean burning, extremely accurate, and meters very consistantly.

It'll work for what you're wanting, but there are a lot of better choices for the 223 in my opinion.

I use Varget in both .223 and .243. My groups in .223 with 50 gr bullets are abot 3/8" out of a contender 14". In .243 with a Handi Rifle, I get about the same with 70 gr bullets. I will be trying 100 gr out of the .243 soon. Guns vary, this may not help you.

Good luck,

Varget works for me in the 223 with 55-60 grn bullets. I like the 85 gr Sierra's for my 243. Which I believe is a good white tail load. I have just started trying Varget in my 243. Some loaders recommend a mag primer with Varget. It may replace my favorite IMR 3031, the range will tell the story.
