Long Term Storage
« on: November 15, 2005, 01:44:02 AM »
I am being deployed so I have to pack up my stuff and put it into storage.  A buddy is going to store my safe for me, but he can only fit it into his garage.  I am satisfied with that solution as far as security, what I don't know is will storing the weapons in a non-climate control area promote rust.  My friend will oil and check on the weapons occasionally, but he has his own life to lead and is not going to have time to open the safe weekly to wipe down my guns.  The safe will be stored in Northern Virginia and we have a full range of four seasons.

So my question to you all is will storing the safe in a garage create a maintence problem?  Do you have any suggestions?  Regards 2Guns

Temperatures in the garage (hot and cold) alone should not be a problem but you may have a problem with condensation due to temperature changes and humidity which will lead to rust. This would be lessoned if the garage is attached to the house and worse if it is detached.
I would suggest that you clean and oil your guns well and place each one in one of those silicone treated gun sleeves.  Never store guns in leather cases or holsters, they wick moister out of the air and will rust a gun but quick.  Speaking of leather, clean all leather accessories like slings, holsters and your hunting boots with Saddle Soap then apply a lite coat of Obenauf's Boot Grease before placing them in storage.  Obenauf's will not mildew like many of the other leather preservatives on the market.

Good luck on your deployment.  Our thoughts and prayers go with you.
