peep for the 1894?

What's the choices for a peep for an 1894. Does it have to be drilled? Or could it be wood mounted?

The Winchester and Marlin M1894 receivers are already drilled and tapped for receiver (peep) sights.

If you are referring to a TANG-mounted peep sight, then YES, the receiver tang would need to be drilled and tapped for the specific tang sight you want to use.

Lyman and Marbles makes them, as well as others.

It's probably not a good idea to mount a peep sight on the woodstock for obvious reasons.  That stock/receiver joint can easily shoot or work loose and give you major inaccuracy.

All pre-war Winchester '94's were tapped for tang sights. Almost all post -war '94's were tapped for receiver sights, until the angle eject models. On post -war '94 Winchesters you only have to drill and tap the front hole for the tang sight. The sight uses the existing rear upper tang screw hole for either Lyman or Marble's tang sights.

New M-94 AE Trappers are NOT drilled & tapped for receiver sights like the old M-94's.  At least not the ones I've seen.

the 1894 ss are not drilled for peep sights.  they are drilled for scopes and i was told by a fine individual on this sight that the williams company makes a sight that fits the ss through the scope holes and that is the      fp 336 model.   just so you are aware...

I have heard that Williams makes a peep to fit the top screw holes in the new models that are on both sides of the top of the receiver. Jim

I recently got a good deal on a 94 "Trails End" Angle eject SRC in 44 mag. Williams makes a sight (FP94SE or 5D94SE), depending if you want the FP or the enonomy 5D.
These are available from "Brownells". The sight screws on the two rear scope base holes. With my Trails End I didn't have to install a higher front sight @ 100 yds with my favorite load, Hornady 240 XTP and 20.5 H-110, it shot point of aim with some lowering available on elevation. I plan on hunting with it next year.
I Also have a 94 in 32 Spl made in 1923 that wasn't drilled and tapped for a receiver sight.

I put a Lyman # 2 (tang) on my Trapper and am very pleased. The extra sight radius is just the ticket for the short barrel.   If I had to do it over again, I'd go with a Marble sight.  The Marble has windage adjustments while the lyman doesn't.

I just put a Williams Foolproof receiver sight on my Marlin 1894P. The rifle was already drilled and tapped for it, and the sight works great.

The Windage base adjustments, offered by the Marbles tang sight, is why I have them on my leverguns...

I have a Williams peep on my 39A but I would recommend this one now, I have it on my 1894 44 mag.  It is great and not very conspicuous.

I put an XS sight systems peep sight on mine and change the front sight out to the one they provide.  It is really fast on target.  Front sight is a bright white and stands out easy. 

I put a New England Custom Gun peep sight on a ruger #1 45-70 and love it.  It uses the factory front sight put they do provide front sights if needed.  They also make one that fits a weaver mount.  A set of two piece bases, only put one piece on and put the peep on that.  It might work with the front sight.  I would check with them first and see.

I do like the NECG peep a little better than the XS but both work just fine.

I put a Lyman 66 on my 94...fit right in those pre-drilled and tapped holes in the frame.  I think since the 50's they were coming out of the factory drilled and tapped for peep sights. 

Either Williams or Lyman makes peeps that will slap right on the 94....either one should do it.  Should be two holes on the left side of the frame there...probably with little plug screws in there.
