I hunt Illinois with a 357 Maximum TC Contender.  In IL it has to be 30 cal or larger and 500 ft lbs energy.  Bottlenecked cases are restricted to a 1.4" max case length, straight wall cases have no restriction on length.

I'm confident out to 100 yds from a solid rest.

In that price range, a used Ruger Blackhawk in 357 Mag, 41 Mag or 44 Mag.  :D

I'll second Redhawk1 and Jerry Lester on their choices, but only if you can't find a used S&W in either of those three calibers.  Mikey.

What, no 45 Colt?
« Reply #6 on: November 17, 2005, 04:33:45 AM »
Okay I will start the trouble if no one else will.  How about a Ruber Blackhawk in 45 Colt.  With +P loads or handloads it will top the list of other recomended Blackhawk calibers.  (wait one minute while I put on my flak jacket before you start shootin back)   :D

Borrow a friends?
« Reply #7 on: November 17, 2005, 09:55:14 AM »
I started out borrowing a few different friends guns first(.44,.41 &.357mags).Then pick up a used taurus 6in. .357mag. for $200. and shot a few deer with it.But you always need bigger so last year I bought a ruger SRH in .480. I really like this gun so far but with scope and all it was app. $800.I let a friend use my .357 last year and he shot 2 deer with it and wanted to buy it but I had already bought  reloading dies /powder/bullets ect . for it so I didn't let it go.

watch the gun shows and used gun shops. you should be able to get a used contender or ruger blackhawk in that price range. check out fiends guns (shoot them if you can).
buying too little or less than what you want usually ends up costing more in the long run.
put em where you want em

Illhunter, if your going to be hunting in Illinois it will have to be a revolver.

Check out www.gunsamerica.com  I saw last week a shop on there blowing out their blackhawks.  They had some .45 Colt Blackhawks, nib, for only $250!!!!  I do believe they had .44 mags also.

I hunt Illinois with a Contender.  Centerfire single shots, as well as centerfire revolvers are legal here.  See pg 10 of the regs.

All the calibers mentioned are true preformers on whitetails. I believe the .44 and .45lc to be the most versitile as far as diff. types of bullets and loads.

how is the recoil of the 45lc compared to the 44 mag and what type of power does it have??? i've been thinking about getting a hunting handgun in 357 mag. i know i don't want a 44 right now and i hadn't really thought about the 45lc since i don't know much about it.

A black hawk in 45 lc has worked for me. Factory loads are deadly yet mild recoil. The 45 lc can be loaded in the black hawk to very hot loads and is bigger in bore than 44 (.429) as compared to 45lc at .452. Great deer slayer.
