500 S&W spraying bullets
« on: November 17, 2005, 04:03:55 AM »
I carried my 500 to the range yesterday and with 42 grs. of H-110 and a Sierra 350 gr. JHP the gun shot decent (2" @ 50 yds). I then shot the same bullet with 43 grs. of H-110 @ 100 yds. The gun shot a two foot Vertical group. This gun does not seem to like 325gr. JSP or 350 gr. JHP. It shoots the 275 gr. Barnes pretty good. I'm not real impressed with the accuracy of this gun. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

How many rounds have you shot from it totally now...?From your other post you seem to have at-least 1 good accurate load...

I had my gunsmith put on a limbsaver pad (grind to fit) and it helps a lot. I've shot the Mag-tech 275 Barnes and the 325 JSP. The gun does not like the 325 JSP at all. The 275 Barnes shoots an inch @ 100 yds. I bought some Sierra 350 gr. JHP's and hope to test them soon. I'll let you know how they shoot.

I've run 60 rounds through the gun since I got it. I have not shot anymore of the Barnes bullets since the other day. (ran out) I bought the Sierra's because that's what they had in stock. I'll play with them some more I guess. I had never seen a rifle string shots that vertically before.

How wide is your group size ?.
If it's only few inchs wide, problem may not be the bullet, inconsistant velocity could strech the group verticaly for example.

Inconsistent lockup can cause vertical stringing, make sure the latch and latch shelf are clean and dry, no lube at all should be there.

The transfer bar also requires a full pull or inconsistent pin stirkes will occur leading to inaccuracy.

Be sure and read all the stickys at the top of this forum list, there's a lot of good info in there that can help you.

As stated above, if the action is locking up completely and there is a good firing pin strike, the issue may be a high velocity variation.  43 grains of H110 is listed as maximum on Hodgdon's site with 350-grain bullets, but your rifle may not like H110.  I used H110 in two of my .45-70s (Sierra data) some years ago and got terrible velocity spreads on 5-shot strings.

I would try either H4227 or LilGun - both are a bit easier to ignite than H110.  Make certain you are using a hot primer - Hodgdon uses a WLR, a pretty hot standard primer.  Alliant recommends AA#9, which may work better too.

I use sierra 350 gr jhp with 39.5 grs of h-110 in my 500 handi and very pleased with the results. At fifty yards all shots are almost all touching. At 100 yds most groups are around 1.5 inches with one five shot group at one inch.Every rifle is different. Good luck

The extreme spread was only 30 fps. I'm going to get a lb. of Lil Gun and try that. I also ordered another box of the 275 gr. Barnes bullets. It seemed to like them pretty good. I had five of them left and that's what it's zeroed with. Deer season opens in the morning so hopefully I'll get to try it out.

As others have said, every gun is different!!
I have been to the range a couple times now with mine and found some of its likes and dis likes. Mine dosen't like lighter bullets!!

Three different loadings with the 350gr Sierra nets a 3" 50 yrd group at best. But yet the 400 gr shoot closer to 1.5 at 50 yrds and the 500's are about the same.

I have been using lilgun and H110, I have some 4227 and 1680 ;oaded up but haven't shot it yet.

Dont give up!!!  Keep at it, if you do, you'll find something that works, I promice!!
