i just ordered this scope today,havent looked through one yet,just wanted one.
anyone have any dealings or experience with this scope,hope i made the right choice,cause i was almost going to get the 30 mm tube illuminated dot scope..any info would be greatly appreciated.. :-)

The one with the 30mm tube and electronic dot sucks. I own one and I don't like it solely because, even at it's brightest setting, it is still very, VERY dim!

I have the 2.5x-10x-40mm in the non firefly version, and it's an awesome scope. I have it mounted on a Tikka WH in 7mm-08...talk about a perfect combination!

I also have a 1.5x-4.5x in the 3200 series, but this DOES have the firefly. The only thing that I don't like about it is that during the day the cross-hairs are too thick for my taste. However, during the evenings, the firefly reticle is quite bright and is thinner. Keep in mind that the glow goes away slowly.

yea,i thought about the cross hairs being a little thicker than the multi-x retical,but it is going to be a hunting scope not one that i am going to be shooting at the range all the time,and the little thicker cross hairs should be great for quick point of aim on game.
i would love to have the 7mm-08 in a whitetail hunter,but they stoped making them in 2003,did you get that one off of a guy on here?cause i seen were someone had one for sale on here a while back.
is the 4200 1 inch tube brighter than the 30mm tube...

i hope i am going to like the scope,and the firefly retical....

I bought my Tikka WH in 7mm-08 off of gunbroker.com. You are right, they are no longer made, and thus very difficult to find - especially NIB.

With regards to your question of which is brighter in the 4200 series (or any other scope of equal quality) the 1" or 30mm, the answer is that they are both the same. I would believe that the 30mm tube would be brighter, but I have been told that I am incorrect. It is undisputable that bigger tubes allow for more internal adjustments (all else being equal) but not brighter.

I look at it this way. Take a tube that is pencil thin. Then take, say, the inside role of a paper towel role. Doesn't it seem that the paper towel role, because it is bigger, is thus brighter? Again, I think so, but everyone tells me that I am wrong.

Your theory about the pencil size tube and the paper towel roll tube is correct for the naked eye, but the thing that throws the wrench into this is the lens. The lens actually transfer the light thru a specific point in the lens, not really thru the whole lens, except the objective lens. When you compare a 1" tube to a 30mm tube, typically there is no correlation because both scope have a 1" lens internally for the light to travel thru. No all cases, but most. This is why there is no difference in the brightness.

As for the firefly vs the multi-X, I personally like the Multi-x better. I do not like the heavier outer post of the Firefly or the Illuminated Dot.
