"Bear Caliber" leaves a lot of room for discussion, and a big hole that needs a little more information to pin it down.  Three to four hundred pound Black Bear, five or six hundred pound Grizzlie, or eight to one thousand pound Brown Bear?

Black Bear, 45-70(300gr), 30-06(165gr), 30-30(150), .35 Remington(200), or .270(150gr).

Grizzlie, 45-70(400gr), 30-06(200gr), .35 Whelen(250gr), .338-06(225gr), .350 Rem Mag(225gr), .300 Win Mag(220gr).

Brown Bear, .450 Marlin(400gr), .375 H&H(300gr), .338Win Mag(250gr), .416Rigby(400gr), .458 Win Mag(500gr).

This is what I personnally would want the people I was backing up to be carrying.

Gun is unimportant, since I usually carry single shots, I only expect to get one shot anyway.  I usually carry a TCR, or Handi Rifle.  Sometimes I carry one of my Ruger M-77s, or a Mauser.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Actually I prefer a bow.  BowTech Pro 40 Dually at about 68 pounds with Carbon Express arrows and Stinger broadheads.

If I was hunting out of a bear stand it would be a Contender.  .357 max, .44 Mag or .445 SM.

I'm really fond of my 9.3x62 and 375 H&H.  I like my guide gun 45/70 for backup and bear baiting.

9.3x62- 286gr Partition
375 H&H - 260 Accubond(black) and 270gr TSX(grizz&brown)
45/70 - 405gr kodiak bonded @ 1950fps

Being that the only bear hunting I would or will ever do is black bear hunting, my 444 Marlin with Hornady's 265 gr Flat Point LIGHT MAG ammo or my 280 Rem. with Federal's 150 gr. Nosler Partition or 160 gr. Trophy Bonded Bear Claw will do just fine for me!

Hey everyone, Just wanted to know whats everyone's favorit bear caliber / weight / rifle

For me the following is what I prefer to carry for bears.

Black Bear - Win. M70 .450 Marlin shooting a 350 gr. Barnes X bullets ahead of 54.1 gr. of IMR-4198 for 2,361 fps.

Inland Grizzly - Win. M70 .450 Marlin shooting a 450 gr. Barnes TSX bullets ahead of 51.6 gr. of IMR-4198 for 2,214 fps.

Kodiak/Coastal Brown Bear or Polar Bear - Weatherby Mark V .375 Weatherby Magnum shooting a 300 gr. Barnes TSX bullets ahead of 86.8 gr. of H4350 for 2,775 fps.

These are my preferred choices for critters with teeth, claws and a preference of meat in their diets.  Lawdog

I shot my biggest brownie (9.5') with my M98 Siamese in .45-70, firing the Hornady 350 @ 2050 fps.  One shot, one kill at 50 yards on Baranof Island.

The .338 Magnum killed a medium inland grizzley off the Taylor Highway.  200 X-bullet @ 2900 fps, 150 yards, one dead bear.

I once had to face down a huge Brownie on Kodiak with my T/C in .30 Herrett.  My hunting buddy (AK taxidermist) had a .44 Mag. SBH.     Fortunately we didn't have to fire although the boar ran to within 25 yards of us.   We got a very close look at it and my buddy said it was close to 11 feet.  Badly rubbed though, it would have been a shame to kill it.   :(

All I have had the chance to go after is Black Bear and a 45-70 with Garret's made the one I shot very dead very quick.  Having said that, I have a .45-120 BPCR that I would love to shoot a bear with.....
580gr. traveling at 1,500 fps. If all else fails I could hunt truck with it.

.3006 for blackies (damn i love that caliber, you can do so much with it..)
Usually carry a .458 lott for browns, I dont need REALLY it, but big holes are cool, and what if I'm out on my property in trapper creek and an elephant charges? :-D   I'm going to get a .300 remington ultra mag for hunting browns though, great ballistics on that cartridge, plus a scope for longer range... etc.  You can hunt bear with anything .3006 or over, you just have to make sure you place your shot right.  But keep this is mind, if you are hunting brown bears, a double lunged bear can run over 50 yards, which means turn and eat you.  So I recommend something which could stop a charge if looking for big brownies (.375HH plus)

I just picked up a 338 RUM for a steal while down in michigan over the holidays.  Should make a dandy long range moose/bear/anything rifle.  225gr Barnes TSX @ 3100fps, flatter than a 7mm with more energy than a 375 H&H.

I use my Weatherby rifle chambered in .300 Wthby for everything... I've never had to shoot twice in the 4 years that I've been hunting with it... To date it's killed 2 black bear, 1 moose, 5 coyotes, and 2 caribou... I would not hesitate to take it to Kodiak for one of the big bears, if I wanted to hunt them...

Usually it's whatever I have in my hands while I'm hunting deer in Maine,  30-06, 45-70 or .35 Whelen, since you can hunt black bear at the same time. I've only seen two while still hunting for deer, never had a good shot to take. If I ever just hunt for black bear my choice would be my .35 Whelen. CEJ...
If I can't take my rifles with me, I don't want to go!

My favorite is the boring .338 Win Mag. A very "understated" round. It simply works...time and time again. 275 Swifts for Grizz and above...200 Nosler ballistic tips for blackie. Accurate as needed, plenty of power out to 200 if need be.

best,
bhtr

I have to name 3 different rifles 2 are Rem 700's, stainless steel, synthetic stocks in 300 RUM and 375 RUM both with 4.5x-14x VX111 scopes, and my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 with XS Ghost Ring Backup sights and Leupold 2x-7x compact.

This year I plan on using my 7.5" barreled Ruger SRH 454 Casull as well.

Do we have to have hunted bear in order to respond?

Well, I'm sure that my 45-70 loaded with 300 grain Barnes or my 300 Weatherby loaded with 220 grain Patitions would do just fine.

21 bears to date, 2 B&C many over 18" and several in the 500lb class. .Browning blr81 in .358 win. .250 speer bullets and leupold 2x7 with # 4 crosshair.  21 shots and no tracking all DOA on the spot. I've also used the 06,.308,.350 Rem. and 35 whelen a .357 mag handgun ,50 cal ml. and bow. on other bears.  But, for me the .358 is it. Last bear was Manitoba 2004 champion 21 6/16 and 518lbs(spring )sq 7'1" 8)

I've been using a 358 norma for 25 yrs loaded with 280 gr Swifts its all you need for any bear on earth. While guiding with the chance of a less than ideal back-up shot on occasion I use a 425 express with barnes-X

Surprised to see not many peeps picked the .338.  I really should have put a poll
