1894C gets a rest this year.

Took my 1894C 357 and my Ruger GP100 5" 357 deer hunting again this year.  After getting deer the last 2 years with my carbine I really wanted to score with my revolver.  I load 158gr XTP FP's for the carbine but for the revolver I loaded 158gr  XTP HP's.  I set up on a little bluff and figured any shot inside 40 was the Rugers and past that would be the Marlins.  About 7:30 this morning here comes a nice 6 point buck walking along the base of the bluff.  I shot him with the Ruger and he went flop not bad for a marginal round.  I butchered him and man that hp made a mess.  It went in the left side of the neck traveled down into the chest taking out a lung then into the right shoulder.  Man that shoulder was a mess, I didn't use a fp due to lower velocity out of the Rugers 5" barrel.  I think next year I'll try Jerry's Rem. SP bullet.  Jerry you ever get a deer with the Rem SP with a revolver?

Yes, two so far. One was a nearly perfect broadside shot behind the shoulder, through the lungs, and out the off shoulder. That one was about 30 yards or so, and the deer went about 20 yards before piling up.

The first one I killed with the Remington 158g SP in my Blackhawk pretty much just stood up on it's hind quarters, and fell over backwards, and never went anywhere.

I've killed a couple also with the 158g XTP-HPs, and the 158g XTP-FPs out of this revolver, with the velocity for both bullets running around 1300-1450 fps. The 158g XTP-HPs, when they do work, really can make a mess of the vitals, but if they fail, it usually means only a very nasty flesh wound on a deer. I've had the 158g XTP-HPs blow completey into fragments on a shoulder when fired from my rifle, and never even make it into the rib cage.

I know I might seem narrow minded to some, but the reason I preach about the Remington 158g SPs so much is because the consistantly work in either a revolver, or a rifle. The only other bullets I've tried that even come close are the 158g XTP-FPs(great in a revolver), but even they can sometimes over expand (shoulders) on a close shot from a rifle, and fail to penetrate enough to give an exit, which I very much want on a deer.

Thanks Jerry next year I'll load up some of the Remington SP's.  The XTP HP did the job but the shoulder is a mess.

Ever tried the Sierra 140g JSP?  Ive had good results both pistol and rifle with little bloodshot.  Used 125 JHP's and man did it "mess" 'em up!

The 140 has good velosity and energy, good for the steaks too.
