375 H&H Ruger
« on: November 17, 2005, 04:05:15 PM »
Many moons ago I asked all of you guys about which 375 H&H to buy. I ended up with the Ruger bolt action and all the components I need to reload. Shortly afterwards I moved and all of my stuff has been put up in storage. So finally last weekend I found some Remington 270gr ammo and gave her a whirl. (~2690fps was advertised)

I know this is factory ammo in a heavy gun but the recoil seemed nonexistent compared to what I was anticipating. The 450 Marlin in a BLR and a 270 in a Remington BDL recoils worse than this thing. Surprising too, the factory express sights seem to be on at 100 yards.

I really like this gun. The gun points naturaly and recoils like a kitten.

Take Care,
Scott

Many a time the recoil of the .375 H&H has been described as a "big push".  The real reason that the .450 Marlin in the BLR recoils so much is it only weights 7 pounds where that Ruger .375 H&H weights 10 pounds.  In rifles of equal weight they are both pussy cats.  The Express sights are set by Ruger for 100 yards at th factory, at least they were on both of my M77 Magnums(.375 H&H and .416 Rigby).  Lawdog

How much did your ruger cost?  so they come standard with open sites. You said the sites are on, but how do you like the sites personally?  I'm trying to decide on my next rifle and in the 375 H&H caliber.  so far I've held the CZ american, and Win mod 70 safari classic.  I didn't like the CZ, the action felt like I was carving metal shavings off when I opperated the bolt.  So far I've got it narrowed to win mod 70 stainless classic, classic safari, sako 75, or the ruger.

The Ruger comes with an express type rear sight (shallow v-notch) and the front sight is a ramp sight with a bead and barrel band, this is standard on the Ruger Magnum series. There are also two leaf sights on the rear that flip up. Express sights are designed for fast target acquisition in bad situations. I do like these sights for 100 yard or less shooting.

I’m not real experienced with it comes to big caliber rifles and to be honest I bought the Ruger because this forum and a few other forums seem to like the Ruger a lot. Being in my situation I was not able to try out various rifles in big calibers so whatever I bought I had to order sight unseen.

Before my purchase I also talked with JJHack (African forum moderator here at GB) about performance issues with various brand guns he’s seen used in Africa. He gave me a few testimonies of Ruger rifles he’s seen used in Africa. Based on our conversation, for normal price guns, I left with the impression that Winchester or Ruger was the way to go.

Hope this helps.

Scott

There are a number of reason why I like the Ruger over the other .375 H&H's.  The Ruger is a solid, well made rifle worthy of all the acclaims it has coming to it.  Every bit the equal or better of the Winchester M70(of which I own one of these, a M70 pre-64 .375 H&H).  The Ruger integral scope ring system is one of, if not the best, in the business.  Add a peep sight from New England Custom Gun Service, Ltd.(http://www.newenglandcustomgun.com/) and you got the best sighting system going.  You can switch around from scope to open sights to peep sights and back without POI changing.  To really complete the system add a scope like the Burris with it’s PosiLock system and you won’t change POI unless you want to.  This is what I have on all three of my Ruger M77 Magnums and I couldn’t be happier.     Lawdog
