Then there is the age old story of the newby in the South pacific in WWII. The fire was heavy and he was not shooting. The Sarg. asked if there was a problem with his weapon and he said NO but he could not see a target and he was told by an instructor to never waste ammo unless you could identify a target.
The reply was something to the effect of lay down some lead down range.
