avoiding beaver till season?
« on: November 18, 2005, 12:46:01 PM »
i scouted a small creek a month or so ago and it had no beaver sign in it whatsoever.  now today im setting this small creek with pockets and come upon a beaver dam that has this creek up about 6" behind it.  i was planning on setting this section for mink, rats and coon.  what kind of sets do you recomend so that i can trap this section and still not take the beaver accidentally.  i must mention our beaver season does not start till Dec. 26

Nothing is gaurenteed, set up with pockets and dont wory about it.
Last week proved interesting,27 pound coon at a rat house,in a #1 stoploss,34 pounder in the same trap the next day. Also got a beaver and rat on the same rat house, also in number 1 stoploss. We also had to let a huge otter loose, caught in a #1 coil--it had 10 feet of cable to run around with.

Chris,in the north country, and some other parts of the U.S.,Muskrats live in either a bank den,or a house.A rat house looks much like a beaver lodge--only smaller and usually made from cattails and mud.
A stoploss is a type of trap. This trap has a spring guard on it.When the trap fires ,the guard goes over the animals shoulder or leg---it prevents the animal from twisting and spinning.
