Ruger #1 Quality
« on: November 19, 2005, 01:15:31 PM »
I was in a local gunstore this afternoon. While there I looked at a Ruger #1 .45-70 Medium Sporter. It was nicely balanced but two things got my attention.
1] The rear sight was canted.
2] The raised rib appeared to be a polymer, if not, it was not a heavy grade metal.
Did I miss something here? Perhaps some of you can clarify the the raised rib. It can't be a polymer, it carries the scope. The rest of the rifle seemed nice.

the rib is metal.

Number Ones are very good quality in general.

mjbgalt,
Thanks. A sample of one is always a risky comparison. I will be going to Cabela's, and they always have a few No. 1s in stock, so I'll look them over in that store. I own quite a few Ruger Model 77 rifles, with my favorite bolt action rifle being my 77 RSI in .308, so I was surprisingly disappointed in this particular No. 1.

I have always liked the looks and quality of the #1----but deal breaker for me has always been the weight of them. (#1B---the only one I like the looks of and is offered in the caliber that I would want in a single-shot)

I drool over them in the store every time---but after handling them long enough in the store the weight becomes an obvious issue. Beautiful piece---just can't see myself humping all that weight around all day.

Picky, picky.... they do weigh a bit, but it helps to reduce felt recoil... my 30/06 hardly kicks at all.

Down here we hunt in tree stands or blinds, so we really don't have to carry the rifle all that far.
