FFFG question

Can you use FFFG  Goex in a .50 cal flint rifle using .490 patched rb ?

Can you use the same FFFG in the pan for ignition?

How many grains for that flint rifle?

I use FFFG in all my rifles, the only exception is the shotgun.  I also prime with it, helps simplify the process and I dont see any difference than priming with 4F. Most of my rifles like 65 to 75 gr of 3F.  I would recommend starting around that figure and work up a loa that suits your rifle.

3 f is probably the best powder for the 45 to 54 caliber rifle group.  For my 58 Mowrey, I find that 2 f is a better choice.

I've quit buying FF, everything I have actually works better with FFF so now I can buy bulk powder.  I still have 2 pounds of FFFF and sometimes use it just to use it up, I've found that I get great ignition just using FFF in the pan.  Goex FFF at $6 per pound allows me to shoot a lot more.

I like 3f, for main charge and prime. Here's some really old charge weight rules of thumb...For rifles, half the weight of the ball is a sensible starting load. But every once in a while a .50, or even a .45 turns up that just shoots alot better with 2f,  then the charge should be closer to twice the caliber. Rifles can be finickier than women sometimes! I also draw the 2f to 3f line at 58 caliber. In older guns, especially muskets with their thinner barrels, the lower pressure of the 2f is a definate advantage. The big bores won't foul as bad as the smaller ones with the coarser powder, so you can just use more, and still keep the pressure lower.

ButlerFord45: Where could I obtain Goex 3F at $6.00/lb? My local shop has it but at $16.00 a pound. That would sure be a cheap way to burn black powder!

Thanks,

Scott.

Central Kentucky, it's still in the big 25# plastic bags, two bags per box, you pick it up.

If you wanna make the drive, pm me for address and phone #.

Scott, an alternative is to have a case of 25 1lb cans delivered to your front porch much cheaper than buying locally...I order it by the case from a Goex distributor in Moscow, PA for $10.25/lb that way.
