new handi for youngster?
« on: November 20, 2005, 07:21:44 AM »
My son is 11 and although he cant hunt deer until he is 16 hear in NY (they may change that next year to 14)i was thinking on getting him a handi rifle in 30/30  all of our shooting is under 100 yds on our property and i see no problem using the 30/30 for raccoons , bobcat and coyote and then deer when he is old enough.  I was tossing around the idea of getting him a 243 but i am a 30 cal. guy when it comes to deer , and as he gets older he can decide which way to go. Hes not a big boy so i think a handi rigged with a peep sight would be light enough for him to carry all day long. What do you guys think as i always value your opinions. Thanks Tanoose

It aught to make a fine 1st rifle for the lad..and if the peep site isn't to his liking...look at the very small & light weight Weaver Quickdtoo has on his...

Yup, the .30-30 with a peep....

Or with the light weight $115, 7.1oz Weaver 2½x20 would be an choice!!

The venerable 30/30 is an excellent choice and a peep will work fine inside of 100 yards.

Thanks guys i like the light weight scope i also like the superlite handi youth model rifle to go with it but it only comes in 243 it would weight in at 6 pounds with the scope. I guess he could later on fit it with a 30/30 barrel and a standard size stock as he gets older.  Later Tanoose
