Guided Hog Hunt
« on: November 20, 2005, 03:14:36 PM »
I was wondering if anyone knew of a good guided hog hunt.  I have never hunted hog before and I was hoping to plan a trip in 2006.  Texas seems to be the popular place to hunt hogs, but the location is not as important as the guide and facilities.  Any recommendations and their web-sites would be greatly appreciated.

What kinda hunt are you looking for? What are your expectations? There is a vast difference in hog hunts and what you are looking for will help us help you with recommendations.

Sorry GB, a few more details would be helpful.

I am looking for a 3 to 4 day hunt.  I would like to take one "trophy" sized hog and one or two food sized hogs.  I would prefer a place that provides some kind of lodging, but I can stay in a hotel if there is one near the area.  I do not want to hunt with dogs.  I want a spot and stalk hunt or stand hunt.

I hope this is enough information.  I have never hog hunted before since we do not have hogs in Nebraska and I don't know all the particulars of hog hunting, but I am looking forward to learning.

Not wanting to use dogs rules out a lot of places as that seems to be the preferred method at many locations. Like you I don't care for it.

You didn't mention if it matters whether the place is fenced or not and didn't mention if you care whether the hogs have been borned and lived their entire lives on the place or if they are pen raised and released. Most fenced enclosures actually sell you hogs raised a large part of their life in a pen, maybe a large one but a pen never the less.

The Nail Ranch in TX sounds like just the kinda place you'd enjoy. They do mostly spot and stalk there. Not sure if it's still available or not but once they had an option that allowed you to take as many as you want for a fixed daily fee. They also have hunts with a trophy for a fee. I'm sure you could arrange to take the meat hogs for a bit extra fee. They do have on ranch accomodations I think. We have some members here who have hunted the ranch and could provide more info than me. If you search the older threads there are some on hunting there.

I hunted with Mike Carter of Carter's Pasture in northern FL back in '97 I think it was. Mike has 1100 acres fenced but the hogs are living free on that big ranch of his. They are born, live and die right there and are not stocked ever. He hunts mostly from blinds over feeders but I'm sure you could arrange a spot and stalk hunt if you'd like. It would be a tough one tho as the place is as thick as it gets. Not many places you can see even 100 yards on it. He has a nice log cabin to stay in and provides meals. Nice place.

I hunted with Jim Reed of the Reed Family Ranch a couple times. If you can't find that in a search go to www.texasboars.com and you should find Jim posting there. If not ask Kevin how to reach Jim. Jim prefers night time stand hunting over bait but I'm sure if you'd like he'll let you go out and spot and stalk during the day time. His roughly 1800 acre ranch lies along the Trinity River in east TX and has lots of hogs. There are no high fences, only barbed wire and electric to keep in the cattle. This is a pure free range hunt with no guarantees but you can kill all the hogs you're able to I think.

The website for Reed Ranch is http://reedfamilyranch.com/ and Jim's email address is oljim@reedfamilyranch.com.

I have hunted there twice and will go again. It is hunting from stands and it's hunting so there is no guarantees. The ranch is about 1780 acres and is fenced for cattle, but not hogs (or other wildlife for that matter).

Some of the places in Texas stock with pen raised hogs. Some stock with wild hogs that were trapped on ranches or pecan orchards where the owners don't want allow hunting, but want the hogs removed. It makes a difference IMHO. If someplace guarantees you a trophy hog then it is a good bet it's a hog that was released in a small area just before your "hunt".

I'm not condemning it I just want you to be clear and not disappointed. As an 51+ year old hunter with bursitis in my knees, hips, and shoulders and a lung that was damaged from pneumonia as a child and that has only been hunting for slightly over a year I'm not able to do a 10+ mile stalk. Yet I still want to hunt. Hopefully this doesn't offend anyone here.

Since you are in Nebraska, you might look into the Miles Ranch in SE Neb.  I haven't hunted there, but they have an interesting looking website.  Its for pure russian boars, spot and stalk, and you can get food and lodging.  I think this is their website.  www.milesranch.com
good luck.

Thanks for the info Graybeard.  I would prefer a hunt for true wild hogs, but I would consider a hunt in a large fenced area if the hogs lived wild there.  I am not interested in a hunt where they just release a domestic animal in a small area for me to "hunt".  Just like Elmer, I do not have a problem with this type of hunting, it's just not what I would want to do.  I'll contact the places you recommended.

Elmer....Thank you for getting me the website for the Reed Family Ranch.  I looked over their website and from what the site shows, it sounds like they put together hog hunting weekends that include varmint hunting and even some fishing.  That sounds very interesting to me.

Mad Dog....I didn't know about Miles Ranch.  Thank you for the information.  From what the website said, it sounds like they are the only guide in Nebraska that has hogs to hunt.  This would be the most convenient hunt in terms of distance traveled.  I also noticed they offer a lot of other hunts as well.  I will have to keep this place in mind for future hunts as well as the hog hunt I would like to do.

Since there are no wild hogs running loose in Nebraska they would most likely be pen raised and turned loose for the hunt. I'd check the size of the area. I'm sure it's high fenced and perhaps small.

I'm not familiar with the varmint hunts Jim Reed might be offering at this time but there are a LOT of coyotes on his place and for sure no shortage or skunks or coons. He has at least two fishing lakes I believe with Bearman being the largest. There is access to the Trinity river also from the back end of the place.

It's not so much organized varmint hunts as you are allowed to hunt varmints. They have coyotes, bobcat, skunks, and an over abundance of coons.

Have no doubt there are bobcats there but I've not seen one in two visits. Sure wish I had.   Coons a plentyy especially at the feeders at night. But man does he have the skunks, ain't never seen so many anywhere else. Coyotes are there in huge numbers. We were serenaded nightly and at times up real close and personal. I'd think a bit of calling for them would get you some of them.

I could have easily taken coons and skunks every time I was at the blinds I think but would have been making noise that might have scared off the hogs we were hoping for. A rimfire taken along just for them might not tho.

What I'd like to do if I ever get back for a third visit would be to roam those bottoms during day time spot and stalk hunting for the hogs. But then with my breathing problems I'm not sure that is gonna be do able ever again. I could cruise slowly on the four wheeler tho and I'm thinking a fellow could still get up close enough that way if the four wheeler is a quite one like mine is.

If SC is not too far I can recommend Black River Plantation.

www.blackriverplantationsc.com

all hogs are true feral, wild animals, hunt from tree stands, all fair chase.

they have lodging you do your own cooking.

You may want to check with your DNR. I am a former resident of Big Red land and my brother tells me there are quite a few wild hogs running in south central, as is the same here in Iowa. I have not taken up the hunt for the "porkers" but its on my list.

405-783-9948 lester hawkins

hes got a ranch that has a ton of big hogs, literally over ran with hogs. charged us $25 to hunt and $100 bucks for any sized hog we killed. a buddy took a 400+ pounder with 3.5 inch cutters the first day. i saw many hogs over 200 pounds and connected with one 375 pounder with a 2 inch cutter on one side and some enormous hooks.

check him out-- hes a great guy and has one nice lodge to accomodate anyone.
