Nosler ballistic tip crimping??? Do or dont?
« on: November 20, 2005, 06:03:03 PM »
I am reloading for my wifes 243 Browning BLR. Before I was using Hornady SST 95gr, and 41 gr. 3100.
Decided to try the 95 gr Noslers without the cannelure groove. After destroying 5 or 6 cases, I decided maybe I better ask if I should crimp these or not. Or are they relegated to my bolt action? Thanks. DM

It's late and I could be missing something, but isn't the BLR stack magazine fed?  If so, then they should be fine without crimping.

Yes it is mag fed, and you are right. Problem is I couldnt even put a light crimp on them without buckling cases. Whats the secret.

No crimp at all should be just fine.

It is generally accepted that bullets without a crimp groove should not be crimped.  Lee did make their "factory crimp" die, and got into a rather heated public dispute with Speer in the slick adverts for awhile.  While the Lee equipment did allow crimping bullets without a cannelure without destroying the case, bullet makers weighed in against the practice.

IMO if the bullet does not have a crimp groove, it should not be crimped.  I never crimp bullets used in stack magazines regardless of the presence of a crimping groove.

As others have noted, do not crimp bullets if it's not necessary--I would crimp if loading for a Winchester 94 .30-30 for example.

I would never crimp a bullet without a cannelure--its ballistics will be changed because pressures will change around the bullet depending upon the crimp.  These changes might be miniscule, but if you are looking for sub-one inch accuracy then crimping will affect that accuracy.  You should be able to get sub-one inch results out of a Browning BLR, it locks up like a bolt action.  You'll just need to experiment with various powders and grain loadings.

Good luck.
