opening morning I christened my 450 marlin on a spike horn. Never took a step. Those big bores hit like a sledge hammer

Opening Day...9 pointer dressed at 197lbs.  Taken in Putnam County with my Encore .50 muzzleloader.

My buddy got an 8 pointer on the same property..and it was his birthday, so it was clearly and excellent day for both of us!

I will say however, that I am not a fan of the Saturday opener.  It was just scarey the number of shots we heard and the amount of people in the woods.

Probrably the worse 3 days of hunting I've seen in the 35 years of deer hunting. Five guys at camp and not a shot fired. I saw one deer. A real nice mature doe standing broadside@ about 70  yards for near a minute before walking away. Fortunately for her I didn't have a doe permit for the area I was hunting. :(

Oh well, plenty of season to go. No sense getting to bent out of shape. Although I really wanted to know how it would be to take a deer with my new 308 Win.

First time hunting with a rifle.

Set out to bloody up my new rifle, but only managed to muddy up my new truck.

Hunted dawn to dusk on Sat. & Sun and about 7 hours today and have not seen a buck yet.  I have seen several mature does that normally would have served my freezer well, but no doe tag so they walked.  There is still a lot of season left with snow in the forecast.  Good luck to all.

I took a nice 4 pointer at 7:15 Saturday morning. I think it is going to be a hard season for 4W I did not hear many shots in the two days i was there.
My new browning microhunter in 7mm-08 with 140 gr. Nosler accubonds preformed flawlessly a quartering double lung shot, both lungs turned to jelly with a quarter size exit hole. Deer turned and dropped a few feet from where I hit him.

My father saw two deer as we were walking into the woods, but didn't get a shot. Other than that, nothing. I haven't seen a single deer yet.

It's been tough hunting over here in Wyoming county, passed on two 4 pts. opening morning and haven't seen a buck since.

Eight of us got together yesterday for our annual Thanksgiving morning deer drive and came away with one 4 pt. buck.

Still beats going to work though !

Well,my cheapo $239 Stevens 200 barked sunday morning at 7:15am and the Doe that was standing at 125+ yards went down as a result of a 165gr psp thru both lungs. She jumped, kicked and ran about 25 yards. We found a huge blood splatter about 5 feet up on the side od a tree and more matter as high as i could reach. She must have jumped and slammed into the side of the tree and then fell and died. She didnt even know she was shot with a gun/scope combo that cost only $239 at Dick's Sporting Goods.
P.S. she went about 140 lbs

Hunt outside of Cairo on Round Top. Saw a few but nothing big enough to shoot. The woods were quiet. Do not like the Saturday opener.

Tight lines anbd tight groups to all and Happy Thanksgiving!! Anthony

I've still got all my tags this year. I can't get out during the week, so I'm hoping my luck will change this weekend coming up.
I haven't even seen a deer where we hunt yet. They have to be out there somewhere...

Hunted for the last week and haven't seen anything since the third day.  Opening day in the afternoon I shot a small doe that dressed out at 90lbs.  A few buddies of mine shot does also.
Posts were out of line. Seems to be nothing but a trouble maker. Deactivated 3-3-06

Nice rack sprest :toast:

Christened my 1905 Swede sporter on a spike opening day. Glad a had my rifle for the shot...all of 10yards :)

As a group we shot three bucks on the opener.

Can't wait for ML season (already down for a vacation day).

My son-in-law assigned his doe tag for 9X to me and last Sunday I shot a large doe.  First time with a rifle and my Marlin 30-30 did the job as expected.  Will be back out for the last three days seeking a buck.  Good luck to all for the remainder of the season.

Bunch of us going down Friday morning for muzzleloader, hoping to get the deer up and moving around. :D

I'm with you Dave on the commute. I'm semi-retired, with 2 young girls in NC. I used to go back every year. Really looked forward to it. This was my first year since 68, I didn't hunt the NYS deer opener. I decided to concentrate on my spots in the NC Blue Ridge area. Too much has changed for me in rural NY. Couldn't afford to raise my daughters there.
Who are those non English speaking people in my little home town? I know it's all over... just felt so wierd at home. Anyway the clincher for me
was the Saturday opener.. That's not going to attract youngsters!
Well my NC focus paid off for me with a nice 10, and 4 point bucks. I don't know when if ever I will go back....

I haven't seen a deer since opening day - last year!
I've been hunting (if you want to call it that) in WMU's 3J,3C & 3G. After the snow fell, I found no tracks in area 3C and a few (very few) deer tracks and beds in area 3C, but for every deer track there were 3 coyote tracks. I found very few buck rubs and no scrapes.

I went down to Catt. county to hunt with the rifle for opening day and shot a 9 point - not a huge buck - but a decent 2.5 year old. The guys around home in Wyoming and Erie counties have not had their typical luck. Some nice ones seen but not as good as years past.

On my property in Northern Delaware County the deer are far and few between. I have yet to see a buck this season. My neighbor(who is retired and can hunt every day) took a decent six point off my property. At least he will share a nice steak or two with me.

Worst season ever in Ontario/Yates County.Maybe the coyotes are eating well, we aren't.Saw more 'yote tracks than deer tracks.
If we don't get an early [primitive] muzzleloading season in '06, DEC can keep their licenses.
